I completely agree HM. SINCE YOU'VE BEEN LOVING ME is a terrific tune and a stellar Velvelettes performance. I hear something new in their vocals eveytime I play their recordings--no matter how many times I've heard them.

Cal Gill & The Velvelettes should have been given the same priority as Motown's other female acts. Norman Whitfield's productions on Needle In A Haystack, He Was Really Sayin' Something, and A Bird In The Hand [[Is Worth Two In The Bush) were just as HOT and well-crafted as any of Motown's releases by The Supremes, Martha & The Vandellas, and The Marvelettes. It's a shame the girls were relegated to Motown's seemingly 3rd-rung VIP label. They -- and their Motown recordings -- deserved much better.

But I don't think it was Motown's fault. I believe since Cal was a teenager, her dad would not allow her to travel so why put money in promotion when you can't capitalize on your product? if i am wrong, someone please correct me. I do agree they had some of the best recordings along with the tier 1 acts [[Supremes, Vandellas & Marvelettes).

It wasn't so much that Cal's parents wouldn't let her travel....performances had to tie in with school so that studies were not unduly interrupted. However, the young are known from being a little disobedient at times!

I was disappointed that Richard didn't mention Cal in his book at all.

Well then, maybe Richard won't be mentioned at all in the forthcoming book about The Velvelettes.

That is, the book I've suggested to theboyfromxtown that he, and only he, can write, while every one of us is still around to read it....

He said he wouldn't know where to start. Two words come to mind - 'Fingers' and 'Keyboard'....LOLOL ;)

I think I was more surprised than disappointed that there was no mention of Cal in Richard Street's book but I was pleased to see first born Richard Jr mentioned.

If Richard can't mention his former wife and fellow Motown artist I'm afraid it removes any credibility from the book for me. What's the rest of it like, ryon6?

Soulwally, he speaks about his childhood years, dating Diana Ross as a teenager, his vocal groups then his time spent with the Tempts but nothing really in detail. He speaks about his brotherhood [[or not) with Otis. I thought the book was rather bland, nothing too exciting.
