Throughout the 1960's, 70's, and ‘80's, Motown released an incredible number of irresistible dance tracks, long before [[and after) it was called Disco. By the same token, Motown was famous for an array of beautiful ballads. If you were to compile a CD [[or equivalent) of "Motown’s Prettiest", what tracks would you include? This could be any Motown track from the 1960's through Motown’s last release in the 1980's. Calling out around the world, Motowners – put on your thinking caps and see what you come up with. The following would be my list, which is by no means complete nor in any particular order. Just a start:

Diana Ross & The Supremes: Forever Came Today; I Can’t Make It
Alone; People [[Diana solo from The Supremes' "Funny Girl")

Diana Ross: Ain’t No Mountain High Enough; All The Befores; Leave A
Little Room; Theme From Mahogany; Never Say I Don’t Love You;
It’s My Turn; Stay With Me

Diana Ross & Lionel Richie: Endless Love

The [[New) Supremes: I Guess I’ll Miss The Man; Where Is It I Belong;

Jimmy Ruffin: What Becomes Of The Brokenhearted; As Long As There Is L-O-V-E- Love; Tomorrow' Tears;

Marvin Gaye: I’ll Take Care Of You; You’ve Been A Long Time Coming; Unforgettable

Marvin Gaye & Kim Weston: Heaven Sent You [[I Know);

Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell: You’re All I Need To Get By;

Martha & The Vandellas: A Love Like Yours [[Don't Come Knocking
Every Day); Love [[Makes Me Do Foolish Things); Forget
Me Not; You’re The Loser Now; No One There; In And Out Of My Life

The Marvelettes: When You’re Young And In Love; That's How Heartaches Are
Made; Seeing Is Believing; Now Is The Time For Love;

The Spinners: Truly Yours;

The Originals: Green Grow The Lilacs; The Bells; There’s A Place We'd Like To Know;
You Want Hearts And Flowers; Once I Have You [[I’ll Never Let Go); There’s A Chance
When You Love You’ll Lose

Stevie Wonder: Overjoyed

Lionel Richie: Still

Jackson 5: I'll Be There

Michael Jackson: Ben

Willie Hutch: I Choose You; I'll Be There

Four Tops: Ask The Lonely; Call On Me; Walk Away Renee;

Supremes & Four Tops: If

Chris Clark: How About You;

Brenda Holloway: Together ‘Til The End Of Time

Thelma Houston: There's No Such Thing As Love

Frankie Valli: Love Isn’t Here Like It Used To Be

The Rustix: Free Again;

G.C. Cameron: Kiss Me When You Want To; I’ll Be Your Servant

Tata Vega: I Need You Now;

The Temptations: My Girl; Two Sides To Love; Just My Imagination; Hey Girl [[I Like
Your Style); A Song For You; Memories

Jr. Walker: What Does It Take [[To Win Your Love)

Teena Marie: I Can’t Love Any More

Gladys Knight & The Pips: If I Were Your Woman; Neither One Of Us; There’s A Lesson
To Be Learned; All I Need Is Time;

Shorty Long: I Cross My Heart;

Billy Preston & Syreeta: With You I’m Born Again;

Valerie Simpson: Back To Nowhere;

Syreeta: 'Cause We've Ended As Lovers

Smokey Robinson & The Miracles: The Tracks Of My Tears; Ooh Baby Baby; Who's Gonna Take The Blame; More Love; I Can't Stand To See You Cry

"Motown's Prettiest - Volume 1":

1. Diana Ross - Ain't No Mountain High Enough - 1970
2. Four Tops - Still Water [[Love) - 1970
3. Jermaine Jackson - Daddy's Home - 1973

4. The Originals - Keep Me - 1971 - Yeah, I know, there's a selection of just about everything else in their catalog, notably the Originals / Marvin Gaye collaborations, BUT, throw it in there, they punch it, my opinion, more potently than Liz Lands', to a [[pretty) awesome soulful begging that should melt any one's stone heart to mush.

5. Diana Ross & the Supremes & the Temptations - I'm Gonna Make You Love Me - 1968 - THIS was THE song, when first listened to it, that solidified golden "I'm gonna be a Motown Maniac!".

6. Fantastic Four - I Feel Like I'm Falling In Love Again - 1969
7. Michael Jackson - Girl, Don't Take Your Love From Me - 1972

8. Martha Reeves & the Vandellas - My Baby Loves Me - 1966 - But really, I coulda chosen any of their numbers here, Martha's one of my favorite Motown voices

9. Mary Wells & Smokey Robinson - I Want You Round' - 1963
10. Kim Weston - Lookin' For The Right Guy - 1964
11. David Ruffin - Just Let Me Hold You For A Night - 1977
12. Supremes - Touch - 1971

13. Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell - Good Lovin' Ain't Easy To Come By - 1969 - Again, any of them would be just as adoringly fine, and any other choice would be predictable anyways - so rip-roar with this - Good Lovin', Good Lovin', Good Lovin', Honey!

14. Dynamic Superiors - Shoe Shoe Shine - 1975
15. Jackson Five - All I Do Is Think Of You - 1975
16. Switch - My Friend In The Sky - 1980
17. DeBarge - All This Love - 1982

Huh?

OK - if MotownGary qualifies SOME Post MCA acquisition Motown - as some new does mean quality as well - then I nominate:

- Johnny Gill - Let's Get The Mood Right - 1996
- Brian McKnight - Love Of My Life - 2001

And I just LOVE, LOVE Toni Braxton / Kenneth Babyface Edmund's "Love, Marriage, and Divorce" as well, but let's face it - that one's just too "real" with so many downers...

OK - if MotownGary qualifies SOME Post MCA acquisition Motown - as some new does mean quality as well - then I nominate:

Well, Ngroove, I'm scratchin' my head here in uncertainty because I had originally meant Berry Gordy's Motown [[through and including 1987), but, the more I think about it....what the heck! If it's on the Motown label and it's pretty, why not?

In that case, we've GOTTA add Diana Ross:
- If We Hold On Together;
- Heart [[Don't Change My Mind);
- One Shining Moment
- When You Tell Me That You Love Me [[Original Solo Version)
- When You Dream
- Someone That You Loved Before

My Volume 2 - "Baby Come Close" - Callin Volume 1 "Ain't No Mountain High Enough":

1. Smokey Robinson - Baby Come Close - 1973
2. Miracles - Ooo Baby Baby - 1965
3. Junior Walker & the All-Stars - Take Me Girl, I'm Ready - 1971
4. Four Tops - [[It's the Way) Nature Planned It - 1972

5. Syreeta - Quick Slick - 1981 - OK, I don't know if any one of you counts what sounds to me like her funkiest as "prettiest" - but, c'mon, seriously, maybe it's always just been her voice, but even that's overflowing with ADORABLE!

but, if doesn't count:

5. Syreeta & Smokey Robinson - First Time On A Ferris Wheel - 1985

6. Eldra DeBarge - Someone - 1986
7. Diana Ross & the Supremes & the Temptations - This Guy's In Love With You - 1968
8. Vanity - Samuelle - 1985
9. Switch - I Wanna Be Closer - 1978
10. Michael Jackson - Cinderella Stay Awhile - 1975
11. Jermaine - Paradise In Your Eyes - 1981

12. Bunny DeBarge - A Woman In Love - 1986 - OK, to be honest, that entire album must be, or would be really, really super nice, to be CD-ed ASAP, or sometime in my lifetime.

13. High Inergy & Smokey Robinson - Just A Touch Away - 1983
14. Stacy Lattisaw - Let Me Take You Down - 1988
15. Diana Ross - When You Tell Me You Love Me - 1991

*BONUS* 16. Lollipops - "Sweet Sweet Love" -1969-ish - often cracks me up, their "Sweet Sweet Love, Come On and Get It" almost sounds like "Sweet Sweet Love, From Marvin Gaye"

I considered limiting one track per artist, but, hey, with Motown, that's just downright impossible. Go ahead, 144man, list as many as you want for any given artist, no matter how obvious the song titles may seem. Just try to stick with slow to mid-tempo ballads 'cause we're gonna do some uptempo ones in the near future.
