Axl Rose: Greatest Vocalist Ever???

Here is an article reprinted from USA Today regarding the "greatest" rock and roll vocalists ever and their alleged ranges:

Take that, Mariah Carey. Turns out Guns N’ Roses frontman Axl Rose has the greatest range of any singer, ever. That’s according to some sort of study conducted by travel website Concert Hotels.

So how’d they determine that Rose is No. 1?

“To create this piece, we took the 100 Greatest Singers of All Time as compiled by Rolling Stone magazine in 2008. To this list, we added some of today’s top singers including the nominees for top male and female artist at the Billboard Music Awards 2014. We cross-referenced the resulting list with vocal range data curated by The Range Place. We included all of the singers on the list for whom the data was readily available.”

As Death and Taxes points out, “The site cited an oft-debated 2008 list from Rolling Stone and cross-referenced it with an internet message board.”

Good songs, but it seems like the people who are on Concert Hotels are hard rock fans. Rolling Stone Magazine keeps trying to stay relevant with their constant stupid lists that are designed to create controversy and keep their name out there.

Bottom line: the result is a joke! Axl Rose a great vocalist??? They're on drugs!

But, there are a LOT of people who detest Mariah Carey's extreme high-pitched screaming.

Great vocal range does not necessarily mean great singer. It's what one does with that range.

Guns 'n Roses was one of the headliners at the past weekends Rock On the Range music festival here in central Ohio. I was discussing it with a co-worker who went just moments ago [[before I read this thread) and he said that by the second song of their set, fans were leaving in droves to go to the other stages. I'm pretty sure the band was tight, so my assumption from the discussion is that Axl's great range ran them away. Perhaps the most egotistical frontman ever, he ran a great band away when they were at least as responsible for the group's success as he was.

And this morning there are reports that after their set in Las Vegas, he's busting the group up again. He probably blames them for the poor concert experience.

I don't know what Rose's vocal range is; from the get-go I looked to see if Jackie Wilson was on the list, and he was - with less of a range than Axl...which makes me tend to believe they have not looked at Jackie's discography in any detail...

Gene Simmons has a tremendous, unwarranted ego! Any man that can go on national television and brag that he has "scored "with over 4,000 women has a huge ego!

I am not a big rock fan [[well in some instances classic rock) but there was a time when Guns and Roses were good! Slash was a big component of that group and when he left it was over. Axl got crazy and acted like a fool and you know the rest. He hasnt been able to keep a good band since. When I would switch channels and see him on talk shows he was so out of it. Too much booze and women.

On some other music forums, there are people who think he's a great singer.

Looking at soul singers, two underrated guys with incredible range are Walter Williams of The O'Jays and G.C. Cameron [[former Spinners lead/solo artist). I have a few O'Jays songs where Williams sings bass, tenor, baritone, and soprano, all in one tune. [[Check out "Give My Love to the Ladies.") Pretty remarkable. He did this in concert last time I saw them, too. A complete range.

Cameron displays a similar range on "It's a Shame."

Not sure range automatically means one is a great singer, though I would say Williams and Cameron are great singers.

* I don't think Axl Rose is a great singer, but I do think his voice fit his group well and he has a good hard rock voice. On "Sweet Child of Mine" his voice quavers so much it's almost comical, though I think that's the affect he was trying to get.

REALLY???? LOOOOOOOOL...............The list is a joke, clearly whomever wrote it has little knowledge on singing, these lists seem to be geared mainly to rock singers which 99% of them can't sing at all and don't even know what real singing is.

I see very few "real" singers on this list such as Mariah Carey, Christina Agulera, Aretha Franklin, & Whitney Houston. No Jackie Wilson? Where are all the great Jazz vocal stylists? Like I said this list is a joke IMHO. :D

Philip Bailey's first album, "Continuation" revealed that he had incredible range. It seemed like each song was in a different key. And when Maurice White's illness took the stage away from him, Bailey sang his parts in Earth Wind & Fire's live shows. In my opinion, he is a very underrated singer.

Thanks for posting that. About 4 people posted the link on my FB Page and in Private Message, lol.........
I have to wonder if Axil was at the 1992 Grammy's when Jimmy was sitting backstage in a chair surrounded by every Rock Star you can think of from Madonna to Eric Claptin while Jimmy was holding court, lol.........
Anyway, that's another singer to add to the long list of those who mention Jimmy as an influence.

Oh and Freddy Mercury of Queen. When it comes to pop and soul we could be here all night.These are probably my favorite two rock singers, as well. I heard that they're making a film about Freddy Mercury. If so, I hope they shed some light on a truly revolutionary music performer. And I didn't care for Journey until well after Perry left the band. Then I realized that his voice was truly remarkable. Perhaps the only rock singer who put as much inflection on certain syllables ​as some of the best soul singers. It's not easy to do.

Can't stand Axl Rose or Guns 'n' Roses...I would rather hear the Richard Cheese version of "Welcome to the Jungle" or "Paradise City" before his own versions. Freddie Mercury could sing rings around Axl!
