Howdy, Nightflight passengers! Hope you are well and that you have enjoyed the recent shows with Susaye Greene, Scherrie Payne, and Andy Skurow, George Solomon and Kevin Reeves! I know I have. Please check out the Susaye/Scherrie "Partners" show podcast at the WOMR website...I remastered the show so it would be more audible. But now it's time to get back to The Complete Motown Singles collection....we've heard TEN years already! When we last heard from it, we had just broken into sensational '69, with the late Edwin Starr and his huge hit "25 Miles"....tonight we'll go on from there. Of note...I am working on presenting to you another show with an on-air interview with another great Motown alumnus. I'll tell you about it tonight....on "Nightflight"...on WOMR 92.1 FM Provincetown and WFMR 91.3 FM Orleans and streaming live worldwide in digital stereo at www.womr.org [[http://www.womr.org) Thanks! John And a HUGE thank you to Bobby Gardner [[SDF's own rossholloway) for his generosity in sharing the Complete Motown Singles for us to enjoy. Thanks, Bobby!!!!

I will be wearing my dirty raggedy scarf and stocking low rolled to my feet while eating homemade jam out of the pot in anticipation of tonight's festivities.

Perhaps we will uncover why Diana gets a telegram that mama dies while making homemade jam then is miraculously revived long enough for Miss Ross to be by her side to die again in the next line of the song.

See everyone here at nine!

I think you may need to listen to the song again. "before she died she cried to see me by her side.."

[QUOTE=Glenpwood;230191............Perhaps we will uncover why Diana gets a telegram that mama dies while making homemade jam then is miraculously revived long enough for Miss Ross to be by her side to die again in the next line of the song./QUOTE]Which version of the song is that???Diana is never by her side on any version I've heard. After mama's death, Diana must now live with the greatest shame of all.The real question is- who sent the telegram?, and how did they know where to send it?, since Diana had invented a new identity and an started an entirely new life far away from home. If people had no reason to doubt the lie that Diana's mama died on a weekend trip to Spain, it certainly wouldn't be them.

I think you may need to listen to the song again. "before she died she cried to see me by her side.."

My point is that the events in the verse are too vague. The first line states Diana got a telegram that mama passed away while making homemade jam. The next line can be easily misinterpreted as mama is crying while Diana sees her at her deathbed then passes. I know were supposed to think mama was crying just to see Diana one more time [[i guess while stirring her fatal batch of jam - originally strawberry - likely changed to blackberry by Berry Gordy so the Supremes seem more hip and urban like Love Child positioned them to be) but the line isnt clear. I guess we are just supposed to follow the Imitation Of Life storyline to say what the truth of the situation really was. Its a minor flaw to an admittedly fantastic meldodramatic over the top song.

Ok, I am off to shoot some new selfies to put on Match.com to see if I can disprove Marvin & Tammi's theory that Good Lovin' Ain't Easy To Come By;)

Motown's official title is "We've Got A Way Out of Love", but it only says "We've Got A Way Out Love" on the record label, yet it starts with the Originals singing "We've got a way out way of love". How very weird! HDH would not have been pleased at the release of an unfinished track.

Who's going to Scherrie & Susaye's "Supreme Partners" concert in Los Angeles July 5th?

I just ordered my ticket. This concert is really going to be quite an intimate affair. The seating chart on ebay is for only 250 people, 200 chairs and five tables of 10 seats each. I got a table seat. I would be interested in meeting any other Soulful Detroit members there. This concert promises to be one of kind. I feel so fortunate to be able to attend.

I have my own theory, which may be entirely wrong.. but it is interesting.
As all those who recorded it at Motown either were a girl group [[Velvelettes, Martha Reeves & the Vandellas or had a female lead singer [[the Elgins), and as the name 'Shivelles' sounds feminine, it wouldn't surprise me if Motown was thinking of recording & releasing another Andantes recording [[with Ann Bogan on lead). Perhaps a new name Shivelles was going to be used, as the Andantes VIP single had not exactly lit up the charts 3 years earlier. The recording session may have been scrapped/erased once Gladys Horton announced her departure from the Marvelettes and Ann Bogan was selected to be her replacement.

Back then I didn't like it initially because it sounded so light to me. It didn't seem to have any bass to it. And I prefered the more driving bass sound that MoTown seem to moving away from. The 45 version on the Supremes Ultimate Collection is pretty good. But John really brought out the quality of the song with his mix.

My theory is that Motown was considering signing the Shirelles. Rs and Vs can be mistaken for each other when handwritten, so when it was typed up "Shirelles" became "Shivelles". I completely made this up, but it does sound remarkably plausible.
