Eminem, the Four Tops, Iggy Pop & the Stooges and Sponge were among the winners at the 23rd annual Detroit Music Awards, which took place Friday night, April 25, at the Fillmore Detroit.
The local band the Infatuations were the top recipients overall, with four DMAs including Outstanding Live Performance, Outstanding Blues/R&B Recording and Outstanding Video/Independent Budget for “Yesterday Morning” and Outstanding R&B Artist/Group.
Eminem received two awards, including Outstanding National Major Label Album for “The Marshall Mathers LP 2” and Outstanding Video/Major Budget for “Berzerk.” The Four Tops’ “50th Anniversary: Singles Collection 1962-1972” was voted Outstanding Anthology/Compilation/Reissue,” while Sponge won Outstanding National Single for “Come In From the Rain” and the Stooges’ “Ready To Die” was the year’s Outstanding National Small/Independent Label Album.
Other multiple DMA winners included: the Howling Diablos, Carolyn Striho, drummer Skeeto Valdez and Christian artist Marq Andrew Spec with three each; and, with two each, singer-songwriter Jill Jack and Tosha Owens, Howling Diablos frontman Martin “Tino” Gross, country artist Juliana Ankley, gospel singer David Winans and percussionist Muruga Booker. Steve Scott Country won the Opportunity Detroit People’s Choice Award.
Berkley-raised rock artist Marshall Crenshaw, jazz pianist Charles Boles and the late concert poster artist Gary Grimshaw received Distinguished Achivement Awards during the ceremony.
The DMAs presented awards in more than 70 categories covering all aspects of music on Friday. A full list of winners is posted at www.detroitmusicawards.com.
