Arguably, one of the best years in music [[I guess during the Rock/Soul/Pop era.....). There so, so many great songs and recordings that came out at that time. Not all were masterpieces, but most were very popular across the board! Tell me your favorite songs from 1974. Here's just one of mine, Lamont Dozier and "Fish Ain't Bitin":

I think a more interesting conversation would be the best year in music! I may go with 1966, but it is a very hard task to pick a best year.

Well, I felt 1974 was a pretty special year in music and the fact that it is the 40th anniversary are why I chose to focus solely on it for this thread. Another favorite from 1974:

1974 was when most people first heard Chaka Khan/Rufus when "Tell Me Something Good" was a huge hit:

I think "For The Love Of Money" is a masterpiece from 1974 year [['I'm not totally sure if previously than the "Ship Ahoy" 1974 PIR album, the single was issued in 1973, ??).

Some others [[I'm sorry if i'm wrong and are not from 1974, I think they are): "A Mother For My Children" and "One For The Money" by The Whispers; "Future Shock" by Curtis Mayfield; "This Can Be Real" by Natural Four; "The Love I Lost" by The Blue Notes; "Love Is The Message" by MFSB; "I'll Always love my mama", by The Intruders; "Thanks For Saving My Life" and "The Whole Town's Talking" by Billy Paul; "I Want You", by Marvin Gaye; "Wonderful" by Isaac hayes; "A Beautiful day" by Ecstasy, passion & pain; "Chaper To keep her" by Johnnie Taylor; "Funky Stuff" by Kool & The Gang; "Sexy mama" by The Moments; "Party Down" by Little Beaver;...

If I recall a particular 70's year on wich there was a lo t of great albums, was 1976 [["Wake Up Everybody" by The Blue Notes; "Drama V" by The Dramatics; "Chain Reaction" by The Crusaders; "Kickin'" by Mighty Clouds Of Joy; "Love's On The Menu", by Jerry Butler; "All Things In Time", by Lou Rawls; "Love Crazy" by The Miracles; "Bondage", by Angelo Bond; "Rufusized", by Rufus feat. Manny you've got it! You are right on the money with the songs you cited! I agree about 1976 being a year of some of the greatest, most enduring albums [[along with 1978 when I bought close 100 albums that year alone!) .

I think a more interesting conversation would be the best year in music! I may go with 1966, but it is a very hard task to pick a best year. Well, there is no one best year. The Hustle! I remember well! LOL! In the summer of 1975, "The Hustle" was one of the coolest tunes on the radio! It has a cool, strong groove going on under the orchestra.

I miss that whole era of instrumentals: swirling strings and horns over a bed of groove. TSOP, Love's Theme...all great!

One thing that the listings above prove. Most of these people were very very talented and Disco did not ruin the charts the way rap has. There is such a difference in taste here for everyone. Rap didn't ruin anything! If you want to blame anything, blame the artists and producers who insisted on putting a rap into the middle of every R&B song.

There is such a difference in taste here for everyone.

And, that's the way I listen to music. I don't limit myself to just one type. I can't put my musical tastes in a box like some people here can. Back in 1974, when you turned on the radio, there was something there for almost everybody. You may even have had the tolerance to sit through the ones you didn't like, but something you did always came up.

Hey remember we all knew who was singing what as well.

I doubt it. If people can't remember today, what makes you think they could back then?

Oh, sure! That was a national U.S. hit single. It entered the Billboard Hot 100 on January 11, 1975, and got to #14. So, it kinda doesn't belong on this thread if you're talking about the U.S.. It got played heavily out here.

Well see it got played several times in late '74 on CKLW [[which covered Southwestern Ontario Canada, as well as Detroit, Toledo, Cleveland etc....) which is why I included it in 1974. Yeah CKLW was a Canadian station, so technically it was not played in the U.S. until 1975.

yeah..1974..so much to remember and be thankful for. among my highlights from that year are

> William DeVaughan - Just be thankful for what you got [[and indeed anything from that album - the only one he did)
> Al Green - sha la la [[make me happy)
> Aretha Franklin - until you come back to me
> Three Degrees - Year of decision
> Three Degrees - When will I see you again
> Staples singers - Back Road into town
> Staples singers - Who Made the man?
> Staples singers > Today was Tomorrow yesterday
> Betty Wright - Shoorah, shoorah!
> Barbara Mason - World in a crisis
> Stylistics - You make me feel brand new [[although the album where this appeared came out the year before)

BUT..on balance, track of the year of me was this one - the hit that kept Stax Records out of bankruptcy for a little while longer.....from West Memphis, Arkansas, Shirley Brown....with this absolute masterpiece of soul

After reading only a half of this thread, I can't unequivocally say it was the best.....but I can't unequivocally name a year that was Better.

There may be some truth in that serum.

To me the best period for rhythm and blues/soul was from 1966-1974, it was the greatest time to be a fan of that genre.

Al Green, Sly and The Family Stone, Aretha Franklin, Bobby Womack, Marvin Gaye, Laura Lee, Curtis Mayfield, Lynn Collins, Bettye Lavette, Gladys Knight and The Pips, Bill Withers, Stevie Wonder, James Brown, Wilson Pickett, Temptations, all at their peak and shaped black culture for good in every aspect.

There were some good stuff post 1974 [[Earth Wind And Fire, Isley Brothers, P-Funk) but it wasn't what it once was from 66-74, I think soul started to decline around the Disco age
