This one's a must for Soulful Detroit members.....

Holland-Dozier-Holland: The Complete 45s Collection
Invictus * Hot Wax * Music Merchant

2014 marks the 45th Anniversary of the launch of the Invictus, Hot Wax and Music Merchant labels – the trio of labels that Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier and Eddie Holland launched following their acrimonious split from Berry Gordy’s Motown Empire. Since the 45rpm record was the fulcrum of the new operation, we thought this would be the perfect opportunity to celebrate the 45th anniversary by pulling together every single 45 release from the discography of Invictus, Hot Wax and Music Merchant, both A and B sides. That’s 96 x Invictus 45s, 44 x Hot Wax 45s and 17 x Music Merchant 45s – 157 singles and 269 original recordings total. All re-mastered to perfection.

In addition to the above we also scoured the world for many of the legendary unreleased singles and a number of extremely rare acetates now residing in private collections. We managed to unearth previously unreleased recordings by the Chairmen Of The Board, Eloise Laws, Honey Cone, the Barrino Brothers, the Jones Girls and 100 Proof Aged In Soul, so we’ve popped these in as a bonus. So another 16 tracks there.

Oh and did we mention the 3 unreleased Tom Moulton remixes we found on Chairmen Of The Board’s “Give Me Just A Little More Time” and “You’ve Got Me Dangling On A String” and Freda Payne’s “Unhooked Generation”? Or the 3 exclusive Tom Moulton instrumental mixes of the above only available via an enclosed Download card?

We recruited Dean Rudland to write the 64 page accompanying booklet and scoured the world for some interesting scans and pieces of memorabilia and we’ve housed everything inside a deluxe user-friendly box designed for quick reference.

This is the most comprehensive re-issue project ever undertaken on this important part of Soul music history. The Invictus, Hot Wax and Music Merchant labels continued Holland-Dozier-Holland’s golden touch with back to back international hits like Freda Payne’s iconic “Band Of Gold” and Chairmen Of The Board’s “Give Me Just A Little More Time” and then went to further huge success with Flaming Ember, Honey Cone, 100 Proof Aged In Soul and Laura Lee among many others. Now, for the first time ever, you can own the whole catalogue in one superb and lavish box set.

Holland Dozier Holland Productions Inc have been totally supportive of this project from day one and we thank them for their keen interest in the package. Eddie Holland has been kind enough to grant us some interview time and we're hoping to lure Brian Holland and Lamont Dozier back into the limelight for this anniversary. Now can we possibly get them over to the UK I wonder......?

This will be an on-going thread, so if I get any good news, feedback or questions they can be discussed here. Many thanks to Ralph and all the Soulful Detroit members who contributed to this project. Your help has been essential to wrapping this project in time.

Best,

Ian D :)

You're welcome Jim. Every physical release is a labour of love these days mate. I just wanted to get this one out whilst I still could. Hopefully it'll join the Philadelphia International Box Set as one of Harmless' best-selling box sets!

It's been a bugger to get together though. I thought it would be easy but, boy was I wrong! It'll be a big sigh of relief when the finished sets come in!

On this set we've gone for the U.S. 7" versions. There were some big differences between the U.S. and U.K. versions so we kept with the U.S. versions and Mono versions where they were Mono on the original recordings.

This sounds like a winner!

Indeed it does!

There was some concern on another thread about this set that the producers might not have had access to the US 45 mixes.

But that thankfully, seems to not be the case!

Hello Ian,

Looks like a superb compilation and I'm looking forward to receiving my box set next month. Another fine job, congratulations!

Question: back in 1973 there was a film called "Detroit 9000" in which Laura Lee portrayed a nightclub singer. She does superb versions of "Sunday Morning People" and "Touch Me Jesus". The soundtrack was set to be issued by Motown but went unreleased probably due to the film being a flop. Not sure if Motown owns or leased the masters at the time. I'm wondering if H-D-H still have possession of the masters. Did you happen to come across any tracks related to this film or any unreleased tracks by Laura while working on this project? Thanks!

That's one of the great mysteries. I tried everywhere for more information on this but came up blank every time. There's two more BH tracks listed in our listing but we haven't been able to turn those up either:-

King Of Kings
Brenda Holloway

Let Love Grow
Brenda Holloway

Was That You I Heard Praying
Brenda Holloway

Where There's Faith There's Hope
Brenda Holloway

'Where There's Faith There's Hope' sounds like an alternative version to the Chairmen Of The Board unreleased song of the same title which we did manage to locate.....

I came across some Laura Lee acetates, but alas, they were simply acetates of recordings we already had. I'll check with HDH re the Detroit 9000" film....

The first time I saw this movie I thought to myself that I needed a copy of that soundtrack. Too bad it never was released. If the recordings still exist it would be great to get a copy in any format.

Ian, do you have any idea how this came about ? It was almost unheard of for Invictus to source outside songs and absolutely unprecendented for such southern songwriters to supply material.

I've received my copy and am delighted with it. I've only got as far as playing the tracks I've never heard before. Having heard Chairmen of the Board's "What's the Use" for the first time, I'm surprised it was never a single.

I hope downloading the extra digital tracks isn't too difficult.

I was surprised to see that the surname of Brotherly Love's members was "Chesnut" as I'm sure I remember reading an article where it was stated that coincidentally it was Jackson, and they had considered using the name "The Sons of Jack".

I can't find anything about the group Sweet Rock. Does anyone know anything about them?

John, am I right in thinking that if you're using someone else's computer, you can download the extra tracks then email them to yourself as an email attachment? There's a small card inserted in the booklet giving a website address and an individual download code which can be redeemed only once. Closing date is 18 May 2016.

No-one responded to this post, so I will do it myself. I now realise that the box set is wrong. The song WASN'T written by Dees and Knight. It was written by Holland-Dozier. Which makes vastly more sense.

By the way, the Hi-Lites and Sweet Rock seem to have been forgotten on the box set, too. No write up for them.

Still a great package , though.

Amazon in the UK have this box set at £70 right now, does anyone know if it is cheaper anywhere else or is this the lowest price?

Motownmorph1 I notice Amazon UK Marketplace dealer Zoverstocks are selling it for £56.44 & £1.26 postage. I've dealt with them before & always been satisfied with the service.

Does the accompanying booket give recording dates [[or even just the year) for the previously unreleased tracks? I was wondering if the Eloise Laws tracks were from the earlier 'Music Merchant' period, or the later 'Invictus' period. Would someone mind letting me know what they are if they are listed? Also the two Chairmen of the Board unreleased tracks [['what's the use' and 'where there's faith').
Thanks. PJ

Again, I think it's insulting to the customer to try to pass off album versions of songs that aren't actually the 45 versions. It's even worse to try to fade them early like the 45s and still try to pass them off as the 45 versions. I don't respect companies that do this. It makes me not want to ever buy anything from them. These companies don't want your praise or your loyalty. They just want your money. They don't care. And, by you suckers buying this set that was created under false pretenses, you are telling them that they can do it again. Sorry about my strong wording, but this company has shown that they have no integrity, and don't respect their customers. This is 2014, and we shouldn't put up with this crap! Vintage soul music is hard enough to get these days. Every effort should be made to get it right. And, if they can't get it right, tell the truth about it!

Bottom line: if you aren't going to use the actual 45 versions, don't advertise it! Period!

I note that the sets producer, Ian Dewhirst, has made a few comments about the use of mostly stereo mixes on this set on the Soul-Source Forum: -

http://www.soul-source.co.uk/soulforum/topic/311207-holland-dozier-holland-the-complete-45s-collection-box-set/?p=2107938

I was going to post this on the thread about this set in the Motown forum, but I think it must have been removed, as the last time I looked at it, things were starting to turn a bit nasty.

Cheers

Cheers Steve. We really do try and get these as right as possible under present day conditions. We've had a bit of stick because we couldn't always get hold of the original mono tapes, so in some cases we had to edit down a stereo or album version which is a pain but what else can you do?

Master retreival and access are the biggest problems for me these days. All eras too. It's amazing how many masters are destroyed, unusable or have been dumped forever.

But I'm happy with the HDH box set. Invaluable as a quick reference tool so always handy to have on the shelves!

No excuse! If that were the case, he should have either made some needledrops or changed the name of the set. Period.

I fully understand how hard it is to get correct tapes from the 60s, 70s, and even the 80s, but you should get your ducks in a row before you do a singles project.

If Mr. Dewhurst had just come here and been honest about it before the set was released, there wouldn't have been any backlash.

Agreed! Here's another flub on the HDH Singles Box Set; Eloise Laws' "Stay With Me" is included twice [[on CD 8 as Invictus B-side 1277 and CD 14 as Music Merchant B-side 1013). Unless they were different takes [[or mixes) of the song, this should not have been done. Also, it would've been nice to have some more information on the previously unreleased tracks on CDs 13 & 14 such as writer, producer and recording dates.

The only recourse is if a collector gathers all of the 45s/45 versions and does the project him/herself.

To be fair, many times the deadline is set in stone, dup plant date is set, and the artwork all ready for the discs. Still, master those records just in case.

It's pretty tricky. The 45 I bought of "I'm Not My Brother's Keeper" didn't sound like the version I'd heard on the radio.

Well, remember that the U.K. sometimes got different versions.

I have this on an original UK EMI Hot Wax single and it's clearly a dedicated mono mix. Whether it's the same as the US single mix I can't say.

The lyrics are also different to the stereo mix that's turned up on various Invictus / Hot Wax hit compilations in more recent years.

In terms of the UK getting different versions, my limited experience is that this was primarily restricted to Chairmen Of The Board singles for some reason. All of the Freda Payne singles that I have, for instance, are proper mono mixes.

The 45cat website has label scans of the "A"s of most of the U.K. Invictus releases ....

http://www.45cat.com/label/invictus

It looks like the following Freda Payne 45s were in Stereo ....

INV 518 "You've Got to Love Somebody" ...

INV 529 "I Shall Not Be Moved" ...

For those who are unaware of how I can tell this [[as the labels do not have Stereo explicitly written on them) EMI had a convention of prefixing the "small version" of the catalogue number with the letter "y" if the record was in stereo. The "small version" is to be found on the left hand side of the label ... so ... looking at the two biggest CHAIRMEN OF THE BOARD hits .....

INV 501 "Give Me Just A Little More Time" is in mono .... http://www.45cat.com/record/inv501

INV 504 "You've Got Me Dangling On A String" is in stereo ... http://www.45cat.com/record/inv504

INV 501 is indeed mono, but it's a fold-down of the stereo mix. I have a mono button that tells me this. It still sounds good in an AM-friendly sort of way, however, because the mastering is very hot in the upper mid-range.

I also have the original US single and that's an entirely different mix.

Strangely, however, the UK fold-down sounds more lively to me and I prefer it for that reason.

The UK release of "Everything's Tuesday" is similarly a fold-down but I also have a version release in the UK in the early 80s on Inferno records that is definitely a mono mix although whether or not it's the US single mix I cannot say. It's on a 3-track single along with GMJALMT" and "YGMDOAS" and both of those are the US single mixes, released in the UK for the first and probably last time.

HDH releases were later put out on a variety of labels. Even I gave up on some of those re-issues except the Inferno releases.

It sounds like I should have got my grubby little hands on that CHAIRMEN OF THE BOARD Inferno 45 Sotosound, as until now I didn't realise that it was any different to the U.K. Invictus 45s I already had!!

I did purchase the two other H-D-H Inferno releases .. the "Northern" double-header of "Love Factory" and "Sliced Tomatoes" and the reissue of "Band of Gold" that had the long version on the "B" side [[which was almost like a completely different record) ...

I should have said that the likeliest place I would have heard this was on Dutch pirate station, Radio Veronica. They used to do a rundown of the Billboard charts every week, so would have played the US versions.

I bought all the Inferno releases and was mighty pleased with the US mix of Dangling. I got the GOld copy and ordinary black copy of "Band Of Gold " [[BOG) . I still have spares of the Gold edition of "BOG". It's the HDH label where I made up my mind that enough was enough

And now I've done the same with "Everything's Tuesday" and can confirm that the version released on Inferno in the early 80s is the original US single mix which, in turn, is different to the fold-down of the stereo mix that we Brits originally got given.
:)
