Gather round, swingers and friends. My 2 hour weekly Motown live radio show [[finally!) starts this Sunday.

We've done six pre-recorded themed specials, but this is the real thing.

Every Sunday between 3-5 UK time [[10am-12noon Eastern), two hours of Motown and nothing but Motown. Well, other than me talking about Motown.

[[SALES PITCH)

There'll be big hits, of course, but I've been given a free hand by Radio Cardiff in putting the tracks together, and so there's a healthy sampling of lesser-heard cuts in there too; albums, B-sides, Cellarful, artist anthologies and the darker recesses of The Complete Motown Singles are all well represented.
[[/SALES PITCH)

People in the Cardiff area can tune in on 98.7FM... but since most of you aren't, worldwide listeners can tune in via TuneIn: http://tun.in/seM37

Older episodes will always be available on our Mixcloud: mixcloud.com/discoveringmotown [[http://mixcloud.com/discoveringmotown)

Hope you can join me - I've had a few requests already but I'm always happy to have more!

Cheers and KTF... see you Sunday!

Consider it done on both counts, honest man! [[what should I call you on air?) :) And thanks Roger for stepping in - I didn't completely understand either...!

Sorry for the brief gap there. The show returns this Sunday - I take a little break the last Sunday of every month for a different retro soul show to take over the slot. [[It's the last vestige of the original plans where I'd have a show every other week alternating with those guys, but they only wanted to do one a month so I do the other three Sundays... kind of complicated!) I can't complain, the station has been nothing but supportive in giving me 2 hours to play Motown B-sides and demos.

Anyway. Do tune in Sunday 3pm UK [[10am Eastern, 7am Pacific) - and the two "episodes" will be available to listen to online as usual on Sunday and Wednesday evening respectively. Anyone have any more requests? I'm happy to fill 'em!

Great programming..great taste. Will have to listen to some of these. I think the right mix of familiar vs. novel tunes. Hopefully some lovers of classic Motown will hear some things they haven't heard before.

radionixon
03-23-2014, 06:55 PM
Thanks Kenneth.

That's been the biggest balancing act here - it'd be easy for me to start playing 2 hours of alternate takes, B-sides and rare stuff from acts nobody's ever heard of, and if it was just an Internet podcast from my bedroom then maybe I'd drift more in that direction - but it's a weekend daytime slot on a commercial FM radio station with sponsors to placate, bills to pay, license requirements to satisfy. Plus, it's Motown, so even the overplayed big hits are still a joy to play [[and I personally think they shine brighter when used sparingly in this context).

I'm not a particularly good presenter [[I think of myself as a writer, not a DJ), but I hope my love for the music comes across.

Motown at its most typical, and best IMO.

I sometimes muse if that track would have been considered for a single, but for the Temptations decision to make recordings which featured only their voices....

I've just played it and it is now starting to play a Motown Ladies show.

Great show, I enjoyed it.

Thanks, I appreciate the feedback.

"Motown Ladies" was the very first Discovering Motown show I recorded [[the day before "Motown Guys") - it was one of six pre-recorded stand-alone specials [[not listed above) which went out whenever the station had dead air to fill [[and can still be heard occasionally now!), before I got the go-ahead to have a regular live show of my own. They were made for a general audience and so have a rather higher proportion of big hits to hard-to-find classics than the regular show, but I did sneak a few offbeat picks in there too...

The six specials are as follows:-

[[Artwork story: I wanted to adapt the magenta sleeve from the Tamla Motown 45s box set, but couldn't find a clear picture, so I just tinted another one in Photoshop - while I was doing it, I found a way to tint the sleeve any colour I wanted, and so the covers for the next thirty or so shows are the Tamla Motown sleeve in a variety of colours that have never existed in real life...)

Episode 30 was very fun to listen to and has lots of unusual tracks. Even though I have almost all of these on the single sets, the lost and found, the other series, it's really fun and gives you an old school vibe to hear these songs on the "radio." I'm going to listen to all of these eventually. Because I don't often listen to the single sets all the way through [[as no matter how great the year, they inevitably contain a lot of filler), this is a way to hear some of the really outstanding rare tracks all in one place. Good job!

Thanks Kenneth, I really appreciate that.

You've got the idea - when I say "discovering", I don't play [[or own) anything a vaguely serious Motown collector won't already have or can't buy with relatively minimal effort, but with Motown that's not really the point.

Rather, whilst nothing I play is particuarly hard to find, there's so much stuff out there it can be difficult even for those who own it all to give due attention to everything, or remember how good track 17 on that rarities compilation is, never mind for a newcomer who's never even heard of Eddie Holland.

The aim is that people who've already heard [[or bought) the songs get to hear them in a new context, perhaps reminded of how good something is they've not played in an age; other listeners will genuinely be hearing something for the first time, and I hope they enjoy it; and everybody gets a striking representation of just how deep the Motown catalogue goes, 30 hours of "Wow, I'd [[forgotten/never heard/only just noticed that we've not yet played) that one". And there's a lot more to come yet before we have to start repeating anything, and I like to think the quality threshold hasn't noticeably dipped.

[[This is harder than it looks - it's not Internet radio and it doesn't go out at 3am to an already-converted audience, it's a daytime show on an FM station with bills to pay and sponsors to keep happy, so I can't disappear too far up my own backside, or use up all the big famous chart hits too soon and thus leave myself nothing but LaBrenda Ben demos and Fizzy Qwick B-sides to pad out e.g. episode 58 - I've got to strike a balance each time and come up with something that could plausibly be a good 55-minute Motown mixtape in the old-fashioned sense, a collection of hits and rarities that will sound good coming out of a car radio).

Anyway, I'm having a blast, the feedback has been really good, and comments like yours are always great to read. Cheers!

Why no Rare Earth and so little Jr. Walker & The Allstars?

radionixon

Why no Rare Earth and so little Jr. Walker & The Allstars?

Are those requests? They sound like requests :)

Rare Earth: well, they were unknown in Britain, and while in theory the show has no limits, in practice, it's primarily a soul show because it's a MOBO station [[as I keep saying, it's not just me broadcasting on the Internet from my bedroom, it's a weekend daytime show on the biggest black station in Wales, with advertisers and sponsors to keep happy). I try to give a full picture of the whole Motown story, but in practice that means mostly R&B cuts from the 60s and 70s [[and sometimes 50s, and very occasionally 80s), with a few musical outliers here and there [[it's entertaining that #14, the episode where I played both Frankie Valli and Hugh Masekela, is one of the least popular of the whole series so far).

It's kind of the trade-off for being able to play unreleased Temptations demos and Spinners album tracks and whatnot, I guess; anything that's not in the soul/R&B spectrum has to be used sparingly. Of course, much like the Bobby Darin track I played a couple of weeks ago, if someone requests it then that's fine, I have an excuse...

Junior Walker is more of an oversight, really - I have a core "checklist" of artists I try and play almost every hour, but Junior was left off it. Like the Jackson 5, I find he works best sprinkled in small doses anyway [[see above re: daytime radio etc), but you're right, there should be more. Oddly enough I'd already started taking steps to correct the omission; I just played "Cleo's Mood" yesterday [[that episode [[#37) will go up online in a few weeks' time, we have a massive backlog now!) and I already have "Cleo's Back" lined up for next week, with plenty more to come.

Anyway, thanks for the feedback, it's really useful to have. Other than that, are you enjoying the show? [[the music anyway)

RossHolloway
08-04-2014, 10:06 AM
@RadioNixon - Yes! I'm really enjoying the show and your music selection.

I think there are some cuts by Rare Earth that would fit under the classic Motown umbrella such as Get Ready, I Know I'm Losing You, Born to Wander and Hey Big Brother. And while Rare Earth isn't technically an R&B/Soul act, they were still a pretty good act and had some soul to them. They remind me a bit of the group Chicago, a bit of pop/rock, some soul and a bit of jazz influence.

With respect to Jr Walker, I think they were a bit more soulful and gritty than most of the other top tier mid/late 60's acts on Motown. One of my favorite cuts by the group include Satan's Blues, Shake & Fingerpop, Road Runner, Whiplash, How Sweet It is and Do The Boomerang. I think all those cuts would fit in nicely with your show parameters.

Other randoms songs for your consideration include Cryin Time and Can I by Brenda Holloway. You're Gonna Come to Me and Sunset by the Supremes. Just a Little Love [[before My Life is Done) by the Four Tops, We'll Be Satisfied by Marvin & Tammi. Oh Lover by Marvin & Mary Wells. Was It A Dream, So Good To Be Loved By You and Rilleh by Marvin and Oma Page.

Wow, that's a good list - I'll work through as many of them as I can in the coming weeks, thank you!

Definitely agreed on the Junior Walker tracks, for sure - I've already given glowing reviews to several of the sides you mentioned:

Motown Junkies: Satan's Blues [[http://www.motownjunkies.co.uk/461/)
Motown Junkies: Do The Boomerang [[http://www.motownjunkies.co.uk/575/)
Motown Junkies: Shake and Fingerpop [[http://www.motownjunkies.co.uk/605/)

...so they'll all feature if they haven't already done so! I agree the All Stars have a grittier sound than most of their labelmates and stablemates.

On Rare Earth... before I got my own show, I used to do a weekly three-song Motown feature on the station's breakfast show [[also called Discovering Motown - I'd play 3 songs from that week in Motown history, celebrating birthdays, release dates etc.) It was great fun, and led directly to the full show I have now, but nobody on this forum ever really heard it because it went out at 8am UK time and the recording only stayed up on Soundcloud for seven days.

Anyway, one week I played Rare Earth's "Get Ready" [[the single version obviously), thinking that would be the best way to introduce the group to the other presenters and the listeners [[again, let me underline Rare Earth not only never had a hit record here, I'm not sure they ever had any records out at all.) The resulting looks on their faces while it was playing were best described as "bored horror", if that's not an oxymoron.

Getting back to the point, I don't dislike Rare Earth [[as we'll see when Motown Junkies finally gets to meet them in a few years), and I was planning to drop in one or two of their tracks giving their proper context at some point in the show's run [[provided I don't get cancelled any time soon!), and I'll definitely get your requests in when I can, but they're not a band who'll become part of the regular line-up in the way Junior should be.

I think the non-acceptance of Rare Earth is a peculiarly British thing. In America, their singles regularly appeared in the Soul charts, while in Europe they appear to have been treated as just another Motown group and tracks by them are frequently included in Motown Various Artists compilations. I'm particularly fond of their version of "[[I Know) I'm Losing You" and the album "Ecology".

radionixon
08-05-2014, 08:39 AM
I wonder if it's to do with musical heritage and their lack of fame at the time. Put simply, they weren't needed in Britain in 1970; we already had any number of indigenous R&B influenced white rock bands [[doing soul covers or not), we didn't need to import new ones. [[Plus the Northern scene driving the "genuine" article up the charts). Because they never gained a toehold at the time, they're left out of the story later on, and for curious newbies, Rare Earth's two biggest Motown 45 achievements - the two Temptations covers - are both overshadowed by high-profile originals which are both much more familiar and probably more venerated, inviting unflattering comparison when RE are measured by those standards.

Only a theory, of course.

I well remember when I played "There's A Ghost In My House" on the breakfast show a couple of years ago, the woman sat next to me [[a high-profile Barbadian soul DJ) started a particularly heated argument about R. Dean Taylor being "soul" at all [["How can anyone call THIS 'soul'? This isn't soul. Just f***ing listen to it, there's no f***ing soul there!") which went on for about fifteen minutes [[not live on air, thankfully...)

@RadioNixon - Thanks for the insight on Rare Earth. For some unknown reason they are largely either forgotten or ignored here in the States. I think they put out some pretty nice singles here. Most of the songs that I listed for your playing consideration were unreleased at the time of their recording, but are still some great songs nonetheless . An entire new record label could have been successful just based off of Motown's unreleased material and been highly successful.

I just finished listening to this broadcast and sat up straight when I heard the intro to the song I'll Keep On Holding On by the Marvelettes. On this version it kick off a half second before what I've always heard. Does anyone know if this was just on the English/overseas version? I've never heard it any other place before. If you listen to it, it goes by in a blink of an eye, but I've listened to it twice now, and its definitely not on the released US version.

I hate to disappoint you, but rather than it being a rare mix or anything [[I took it straight from TCMS 5), that's probably just the station playout software being weird - it quite often adds a tiny half-second [[or less) "kick" at the start of a track, which sometimes manifests itself as an extra drumbeat or hand clap. If you're listening for it, you can probably hear it on every episode... sorry to have got your hopes up there!

I never thought "A New Girl" would ever get played on the radio. Just don't play "I Cried All Night" or you won't have any listeners left.

Bwahaha...! No, that's not going to be happening. I do like to play obscure cuts and artists [[and I try to work them into flow of the playlist so that they're not complete honking oddities), but that would be a step too far even for me!

The show seems to be doing well - we don't actually track listener numbers per se, but the advertisers are happy, it's regularly topping the Mixcloud genre charts, and I've recently agreed to do another stretch of shows which will take me through to episode 110 [[although I might conceivably run out of songs by then, so maybe I Cried All Night will have to be dusted off after all! JOKE! I joke!)

I rate "I Cried All Night" as the worst 60s Motown single ever made - worse even than the novelty records, which at least had the excuse of being novelty records. To play this record would be a case of taking a joke too far.

You can see Radionixon's review of this record and my comment on it on the Motown Junkies site.
