Hmmmm....... All of these songs were recorded in 1972 with Cindy Birdsong in the group, but Lynda Laurence said that she joined the Supremes in 1971. How come Cindy is on these recordings and not Lynda? hmmmmmmm.........

i'm guessing its just a slip of the memory. 71, 72. close enough lol. I believe Lynda's first dates with the group were in April. Cindy was doing the recording and performing during the first couple of months. she's the speaking part in Wisdom of time

I believe the Grove date listed is also with the Temptations. It was a recorded special, would love for that to appear.

Lynda was hired in late '71 but Cindy was still functioning as a member - it took time to be a Supreme. Shall we bring up other quotes from members of that group that turned out to be "hmmmmmmmmmmmmm's" as well???? Lemme know. I used to date a guy who would love to help us out on that thread.

How could Lynda have been hired in 1971 before Cindy was even pregnant? If her son David was born until October 1972 then that would mean Cindy didn't become pregnant until February 1972 which was when the sessions for the Floy Joy album were occurring.

Your math can't be incorrect but I know I've read more than once [[I think) that she began in late '71. I'll sniff around. My birthday is next week, senility is also a possibility but I don't think it's that bad. Maybe Cindy was planning on leaving so they started the search. I can email Lynda and ask her.

I think Lynda's first date was in Hawaii when Motown insisted she fill in for Jean - and did so admirably.

Recorded as a TV Special? That would be amazing to see. Did they do songs together?

Did JMC/JML appear once or twice a year at The Frontier? When was their last date?

In Mary's book she says that Cindy had been hinting around for a while that she was going to leave the group then when she got pregnant it became official. So maybe they were looking around for a replacement before that just in case.

I think you nailed it. Also, Lynda did a Q&A at Diana in Dallas and discussed that period where she a had joined the group but wasn't performing or recording yet.

bradsupremes

Well if that's the case then Jean should say she joined the Supremes in 1969. Cindy could say she was in the group in 1966.

All of the ladies dates are off. Mary has said "You Keep Me Hangin' On" is from 1965. Diana once claimed "Reflections" was from 1973. Lynda can say she joined the group in 1971, but it is well documented she didn't join until 1972 and that's the consensus we go by. Even if you're rehearsing months beforehand like Jean was, you're not considered in the group until you make your first public appearance as a group member. As I see it if Lynda wasn't performing or recording with the group in 1971 [[which she wasn't) then she wasn't in the group as she wasn't included in the group activities and decisions.

Yeah.........BUT her whole purpose in joining the group was to replace an expectant Cindy Birdsong. Cindy Birdsong did not even get pregnant until 1972 as her David was born in October 1972! If she is telling people she joined the Supremes in 1971 and is completely sure about that......then she is lying.

Yes they performed together. I'm thinking it must have during the time the Supremes and the Temptations toured together. I've seen a few stills from the program. One photo is of both groups with the Supremes wearing the white bugle bead dresses with the long fringe on the arms the Tempts are in white tux with black trim. As i recall the special/ documentary was shown twice in Los Angeles

I would think that would only endear her more to you - all things considered. AS is was stated above, it is possible that they began a search for and signed Lynda in preparation of Cindy's impending reproduction. It's also possible Cindy had reason to think it would be earlier.

They did not start any search in 1971 for no Linda Tucker! Mary, Jean and Cindy were on tour of the UK as late as November 1971. An article ran in "Right On" Magazine well into 1972 introducing Tucker, Laurence, Lawrence as Cindy Birdsong's replacement. Pics of Linda with Stevie Wonder were included in the article and some of Linda in hot pants! They did not start a search or hold auditions for a temp sub that early with the anticipation that Miss Birdsong would eventually get knocked up!....... This is crazy LOL!!!!!

He may be upset, I'm just curious to the lengths he'll go. He is also the guy who said Miss Ross was broke after investing with Bernie Madoff and that Mary got her Hollywood Palace solo because she demanded it and the assistant director sided with her. LOL. Now he's saying he knows when they began looking for Cindy's replacement.

The Hawaii show was at the H.I.C. Arena in Honolulu in 1972. Cindy was still recording and performing with the group up to April 1972.

i'm assuming the girls aren't as obsessive about facts and details as we are lol. if someone asked me at a moment's notice what year i did such-n-such with my job, i'd have to pause and think. in in given an interview, they're trained to respond and respond quickly. if she said 71, it could very well be just a slip and she was just trying to answer quickly. as brad said, all of the women have mixed up years of things during interviews and concerts

Brad - any idea who's doing back grounds for I Guess I'll Miss the Man? is that a lynda recording?

Lynda Laurence debut with the Supremes was in May 1972. She quit the group in 1973.

From wiki: She [[Lynda Laurence) was a member of The Supremes from April 1972 through October 1973, replacing Cindy Birdsong, who left the trio to have a baby and begin raising her family. Though not the gospel but who cares. Who cares when she was hired? What difference does it make? Some of you go on about the most inane things. God almighty.

Aha! And there we have it. An admission that the participants in Stop in the Name of Love are open to question.

But I have to admit, the rest of this thread made me think of Hilary Clinton and "What difference does it make?"

Mary Wilson, Florence Ballard and Diana Ross sang and recorded "Stop In the Name of Love". I hope that is clear enough for you. I never had any doubt about that!

None whatsoever but for those who dislike Linda Lawrence and try to disqualify her as a Supreme it mean the world to them.

I spoke to Eric last night and didn't think to ask when Lynda joined however he did mention that Cindy trained Lynda and taught her the show and that there were four Supremes under contract for a while [[like when Flo & Cindy overlapped.) Since the last official Motown approved and sanctioned grouping was Diana, Lynda & Scherrie, I guess he should know.
