While we're looking and thinking, arr&bee, what is the significance of '76' ?

Is this the 76th 'Answer This' question from you?

I'm thinking that if the answer is indeed so obvious, one of us would have answered by now - ?

So, as Soul Sister said earlier, we need a clue....for example, if the act in question is a 'classic group' - then is it a male, female or mixed group - ?

Sotosound

Do The Funk Brothers fit the bill?

Or are we talking about a band where fans always put "The" in front of their proper name?

For instance, we probably all call "Eagles" "The Eagles" AND we probably all call "Four Tops" "The Four Tops". Now, there's a thought!

And seconded, S.S.!

We could collar him, if we could just find the water cooler. Or the coke machine, tamla617! And if instead it were a juke box, that might be helpful.

The answer to this had better be good, and an interesting 'Answer This 77' had also better follow pretty fast....

S.S.

westgrandboulevard
01-18-2014, 03:59 PM
S.S., yours could well be the right answer, but weren't there two versions anyway of one of those groups - so one set of Royales then became The Midnighters?

Which reminds me that here in the UK we had 'The Fantastics', which were originally The Velours. Presume they worked in US with that name, too?

And here in UK we pronounce 'The Elgins' with a hard 'g' [[as in begin), but in the US, it's a soft 'g', as in a glass of gin.....?

So, while we sit here in the SDF waiting room [[real nice music playing, isn't it), awaiting an announcement......

Moe, I can't think the answer is, or should be the Young Rascals, as their records up to a certain date must surely have been released bearing that name [[?) The fact that they were later renamed as The Rascals seems beside the point.

And Tempts for Temptations, or Tops for Four Tops, would be colloquial names, unofficially used at times - like some people refer to Barbra Streisand as 'Babs' [[don't really know why, but I hate that...!).

So...I guess we just wait for arr&bee.

Perhaps we should think about setting HIM his very own 'answer this' challenge - ??!

wgb,
There is the group The 5 Royales with "Laundrymat Blues", etc.......

Then there is The Five Royals [[Alonzo Tucker, Hank Ballard, etc...) who morphed into The Midnighters, later as Hank Ballard & The Midnighters, minus Alonzo who was then writing hits for Jackie Wilson.

westgrandboulevard
01-20-2014, 06:21 AM
Hmmmmmm.....

Well, speaking just for myself, I've certainly always referred to the group as 'Smokey Robinson & The Miracles' since the billing changed for "The Love I Saw In You Was Just A Mirage" single in 1967 - [[if not since the "Going To A Go-Go" album in 1965. Well,it was a v-e-r-y long time ago..!)

That's how the group name was changed on all records, billing and promotional literature and, I guess, trademarked? OK, maybe I'm just being a pedantic Brit! LOL

Some might well have thought of them, and also referred to them as Smokey & The Miracles, but only in private conversation [[?) - as perhaps they might 'Diana & The Supremes', 'Gladys & The Pips', 'Frankie and The Four Seasons', just as other examples.

When I hear a classic Motown record, I hear the drums of Benny Benjamin, Pistol Allen, Uriel Jones and all....but I wonder, with great interest, if arr&bee just might be listening to the beat of a very different drum :)

OK! Bring on 'Answer This 77' ...! LOL

tamla617
01-20-2014, 08:05 AM
I looked at the Miacles' discogs last night and it lists all the names they've been known by

Pasted
"Smokey" Robinson & I Miracles, Eddie Holland, Miracles, Miracles, Smokey Robinson, The, Miracles, The ®, New Miracles, The, Smokey Ribinson & The Miracles, Smokey Robinson, Smokey Robinson & Miracles, Smokey Robinson & Miracles, The, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles*, Smokey Robinson + The Miracles, Smokey Robinson And The Miracles, Smokey Robinson With The Miracles, Smokie Robinson & The Miracles

So I didn't go for them! I did the same for the Staples, Pips etc and did!

1. The Miracles with first album in 1958 [[Great output).
2. The Miracles "Going To A Go Go" album 1965 [[Best album!).
3. Smokey Robinson & The Miracles or Smokey & The Miracles, or Bill Smokey Robinson & The Miracles as the Top R & B Disc Jockey's on the radio & stage shows called them 1966. on.... N.Y./N.J./Philly/Baltimore/D.C. on the Chitlin` Circit.

4. After Smokey went solo in the 70's, back to The Miracles or The New Miracles.
