I love this song from the I Wish It Would Rain album, but I've only heard the stereo mix, which seems to lack some punch. I was wondering if anyone's heard the mono mix, and if it's better in comparison?

It was issued as a single in the UK - I'm pretty sure that was mono.

Indeed it was!

I might be wrong, but I think it might be a fold down of the stereo mix.

I seem to recall this song was talked about in a thread on the old SD forum by the late Deke Richards.

It was cut in L.A btw.

Cheers

Ahh I see. L.A.....maybe that's why it lacks a 'punch'. Haha.

Here is the Deke forum thread in which he talks about the intended title for the song....

This one's for dvdmike@yahoo.com.

I glad you like "Why Did You Leave Me Darling", so do I. Berry even called it 'fresh sounding' when it was played in the QC meeting. There was even talk of it coming out as a 45.

Just so you know, "Why Did You Leave Me Darling", was the working title when I cut the original track. Then, I put through the title change after I finished writing the song and they never followed through before the album came out. The title is supposed to be "It's A Tragic Deed [[That You Do To Me").

. . . and they still haven't changed it. Oh well, that's history for you.

Tony Blackburn played this on his BBC radio show one morning and I was so mad on it I couldn't get it off my mind all morning and I had to use my lunchtime school break to go to a record shop to buy it. Fabulous record.

I remember a friend of mine claiming to have "Why did you leave me darling" on a 45. This was in the early days of collecting for me....no discographies etc. Word of mouth, Record Mirror ads etc.
I assumed he meant "Why did she have to leave me", flip of Cloud Nine.
He insisted that it was "WDYLMD"......and I made s special trip to his house to confirm or deny ! As it was not a USA 45, or on any hits compilation at that time, I felt confident.
Couldn't believe it when a) I saw the 45 b) actually heard it for the first time.
Totally blown away...
Happy days those....

Correct. Stereo singles were prefixed "YTMG".

I don't expect it'll ever happen, but how about this UMG, if you're having a bit of TCMS withdrawals? "The Complete Motown Singles Addendum - UK only releases 1959-1972"? - from Choker Campbell's 'mickey's monkey' through greats such as 'why did you leave me darling' and 'reachin' for something i can't have', up to the Jackson 5's 'someday at christmas'. Iworked it out once, and you could just about do it as a 2cd set.

Correct. Stereo singles were prefixed "YTMG".

There is a label scan here of the U.K. 45 of "Why Did you Leave Me Darling" ...

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/TMG-671-THE-TEMPTATIONS-WHY-DID-YOU-LEAVE-ME-DARLING-/360807296249?hash=item5401ca6cf9&nma=true&si=oguZ44o8pONzyEcu%252Bm6uG79OTWg%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

If it had been in stereo the catalogue number on the left [[above the copyright symbol) would have read YTMG 671, the larger catalogue number on the right would still have read TMG 671.

I have a feeling that the first stereo U.K. TMG was "The Onion Song" by MARVIN GAYE & TAMMI TERRELL [[which came out about a year later), what I am saying about the YTMG can be seen on this label scan of the U.K. 45 of "The Onion Song" ..
