I've been loving all over again Mary Wells's Dear Lover, released as an Atco single [[Atlantic in the UK) in 1965. It's extremely Motownesque but under producer Carl Davis it's unmistakeably Chicago-made. The strings shimmer, the conga drum pops and the drum fills are pure Motown. Then there's a typical breathy vocal from Mary. It was recorded at the time the Funks were, apparently, regularly moonlighting in Chicago, so I wonder who might be on it?

I know The Funks moonlighted on some Chicago sessions like Jackie Wilsons Higher & Higher...but getting caught on a Mary Wells session after she left Motown would have been considered a capital crime to Berry Gordy...

They sound like Carl Davis' regular Chicago musicians on this one. The blending of The Chicago Sound with The Motown Sound came from Carl Davis' signing Barrett Strong as a writer, after his contract with VJ ended.
