Howdy, Nightflight listeners!! Tonight we continue with The Complete Motown Singles marathon as we finish 1963 and put a considerable dent in 1964, as the Motown machine really gets its bearings and the heat starts to rise! Thanks again to SDF's own Rossholloway [[aka bobby Gardner) who shared a wealth of the collection with us to peruse and enjoy.
Join me tonight for all this Motown...and more...on "Nightflight"...on WOMR 92.1 FM Provincetown and WFMR 91.3 FM Orleans...and we are streaming worldwide in digital stereo at www.womr.org
Thanks!
John

Buy 6 get 1 free! That's one way to promote product to distributors. I wonder how long such incentives were offered?

Too bad it was never applied to the average consumer! Could you just imagine , Buy 6 volumes of TCMSC and get 1 free.

I'd never seen the cover for Tamla 248, although 3 of the panels were incorporated into TCMSC 1963's artwork.

Thanks for posting it.

Ahh the transition of 1963 into 1964 is full of great singles and big events like those no hit Supremes finally breaking through with Lovelight then choking with Run Run Run then finally exploding with WDOLG while staying up all night harmonizing on Dick Clark's tour bus.... Not to mention the sudden departure of Mary Wells.... Should be a thrilling evening for us all!

Near the end of 1963 is many an English fan's favourite Motown record: Eddie Holland's "Leaving Here".

Good evening, John.

I cannot tell a lie [[yeah I could). But not in this case. I must admit that I saw someone else on this board [[don't remember who) use the cap T like that. I dug it too, so I started doing that as well.

Strangest thing about that photo that I never really paid attention to before- Mary's right eye appears to be larger than her left eye [[ I assume it's a result of the camera angle).
Also , it's probably just me - but try it and see what you think- take your hand and cover the left half of the photo. Does the resulting image remind anyone of any other female Motown artist?
Who?

No mention in the book for any Mel-o-dy entries except that they think it was possible the funks played on the Billy Merritt cuts since those were cut in the snake pit

Quicksand was Motown's biggest selling 45 for 7 weeks starting on 12/14/63. The record that finally toppled it on 2/1/64 was "When The Lovelight Starts Shining Through His Eyes" which ironically was released 4 days prior to the Vandellas smash, showing slow and steady eventually worked out for those no hit Supremes.

And Bruce Channel's "Satisfied Mind" and a few still unreleased Channel tracks were cut in the Snakepit.
The write-ups for Al Klein productions on Mel-o-dy often indicate a Dallas, Texas connection. I assume that several Mel-o-dy country tracks were recorded there and the tapes brought to Motown.
