Howdy, "Nightflight" Listeners!!! Welcome to October!!!
And welcome back to the continuing marathon known as the Government Shutdown caused by our favorite maniacs and poor sports...the House of Representatives Republicans!! Aren't they just terrific?? Let's give them a BIG hand....I won't say where!

But on a more pleasant note....welcome back to my marathon series of The Complete Motown Singles Collection. Last week, I aired much of Volume 1...1959-1961. Tonight, we move on to Volume 2...1962!

Again, I won't be able to play everything [[as Carole Cucumber identified last week...there are almost 1800 tracks to this magnificent collection...and it would take 20- 30 shows to air it all....PHEW!), but I'll play all I can fit in 3 hours!

Last but certainly not least...a huge thank you to SDF's own Rossholloway [[aka Bobby Gardner), who most generously shared 75% of the tracks you will hear throughout the airing of TCMS!!! Thanks so much, Bobby!!

All this Motown...and MORE...tonight...on "Nightflight"...on WOMR 92.1 FM Provincetown and WFMR 91.3 FM Orleans and streaming live worldwide at www.womr.org
Thanks LOADS!
John

Always wondered why they left the "The" off "The One Who Really Loves You" on that album
cover:confused: No matter, 1962 was a great year for Motown music. It was the beginning of the beginning. The prelude to a dream. See you and the gang on the Radiola for some great memory makers!

Looking at the posted album cover, the answer may rest with a personal quirk of someone [[artistic director?) who wanted symmetry. Notice that the stars on the left [[that list the Motown stars) contain 2 lines and 2 names/words.
The song title symmetry would be 5-1-5-1-2 [[number of words in song title)
Just a guess..

Just a guess..

Looking at the cover again there is a perhaps unintended/unplaned alternate symmetry ;
1-1-5-4-5 [[solo artist/number of members in group) [subtracting 1 from each group of 5 leaves 4; and amazingly, the Valadiers began with 5 members but ended up with 4 at the time of their signing to Motown].

Also the complete title of The Valadiers song is actually "Greetings [[This Is Uncle Sam)". Parenthetical or not it's still part of the actual title.

1962 includes what I consider to be the worst Motown single ever made [[excluding novelties), namely "I Cried All Night" by Debbie Dean - so bad it hurts my ears, yet I found her "A New Girl" from 1961 irresistible. It took her until 1965 to redeem herself with the Northern Soul favourite "Why Am I Loving You".

I'll be catching a few hours sleep shortly so I can tune in.

1962! Motown was heating up. I was 11 years old and sold newspapers. Three cents of every dime [[the newspaper cost a dime in those days) I made was mine. And all those 3 cents' were spent on 45s, mostly Motown. Memories.:)

I did not have a paper route as such. My paper boss would drop me off at a busy intersection with a couple bundles of newspapers which I sold to passing pedestrians and stopped vehicles. Sometimes if business was slow I would shout out the headlines. LOL!!!!! It was a different time!!LOL!!!:D

Concerning Operator, TCMSC doesn't give a clue. In the mono Mary Wells 2-fer on Kent, Keith Hughes doesn't list specific musicians for tracks but theorizes that the general musicians of the era, the Joe Hunter Band, would likely be used. But since it is Smokey producing his compositions, it is possible that Marv Tarplin's services were utilized.
