A message to that effect was left for me by a mutual friend. I knew he wasn't well for some time. I'll see if I can get more details soon.

Well, it looks as though Phelps died from pancreatic cancer. He'd been fighting it for some time. Those who knew him are really devastated and, of course, that goes double for the immediate family. I'm told Wilbert Longmire offered to play at the funeral. No word on whether the family accepted his offer. It seems Phelps wished to be cremated so I would expect that's what will happen.

A tribute to him is already in the works and scheduled for Sept. 4 at Madison Theater, just over the river in Covington KY. Members of P-Funk, The Rubberband and the JB's are all expected to be there. Something smaller and more private is also in the works. Phelps was still in touch with a small group of local musicians back in Cincinnati. They are all just heartbroken. Those who talked to him just a few weeks ago were still not prepared for his passing. It goes without saying, he'll be greatly missed by many.

I met both he and Bootsy when they played for James Brown and were riding in the
back of my brother's '59 Ford. Sad news for sure!
