Shine Like Tokyo - Northern Soul Goes East

Broadcast on BBC Radio 4 on Saturday 21 September at 10.30am, this half hour programme featured Anne Nightingale's trip to Japan to investigate the growing cult appreciation there of Northern Soul in city night clubs.

I found this programme very interesting, but it would have benefitted if it had lasted an hour with longer clips of the music.

It is still available on BBC iplayer for another few days.

Wednesday's documentary will [[I guess) be mostly about NS's Wigan Casino years as those were the years that Paul M was into the music ..........

The Paul Mason BBC 2 TV Culture Show programme on Northern Soul was well made and worth watching. They still honed in on a couple of loons but in general, he talked to the right people and it gave a balanced view on the NS scene both then & now.
The soundtrack to the show was great ........ the Precisions "If this Is Love" featured early on and the show closed with Tobi Lark / Tobi Legend's "Time Will Pass You By".
Well worth catching if our US friends are allowed to view it from across the pond.

i t was Okeh.....as usual, these kind of shows home in on extremes and the clips of exibitionists dancers taken from 1 programme in mid 70s [[staged for cameras).....music was good!

Watch the above to see the BBC's top economics expert recalling how he used to dance 30 years ago. He even tries a back-drop but only the one [[he's too old like the rest of us now).
He gets 'out on the floor' again 26 mins in.
Younger [[& more recent) dancers turn up 24 mins into the piece.

I thought the documentary was well constructed.

It's been a good few years since I've played some of those tracks, and it was good hearing them again..
