Went into BBC Radio Oxford yesterday & ended up being interviewed on a show there [[not soul music related) but I did have a go at the presenter & his director coz the studios [[fitted with oldish equipment) still has record decks & CD players but they are never used [[everything they play is held on the station's computer system. They have 2 radio show studios & 1 TV studio [[news) and therefore have at least 4 decent record decks in situ [[I couldn't make out a manufacturers logo but no doubt they came with the control / mixing desk that they have fitted in each studio).
They guy there [[main man) told us that they are due to have all new desks [[hi-tec) fitted in the near future [[next year) and that all BBC local radio stns [[50 or so in all I guess) are in line for new studio equipment.
Seems like there will be quite a few 'decent' decks floating about cheap when the refit takes place.
While up in the area of the BBC studios [[north Oxford), I dropped into a couple of charity [[thrift) shops to check out their vinyl sections. With all the international students who spent 2/3 years studying in the city, you can sometimes pick up some unusual stuff. I dropped on an Israel made Ray Charles Atlantic album in decent nick. ALSO got an interesting 1967 issued UK soul compilation LP put out by Ember on their Speciality label.
Its titled 'The Original Sound of Detroit' and features tracks by the likes of the Falcons, Mac Rice, Bettye L, Joe Stubbs, Bobby Williams, the Corvells & Bennie McCain. It's in near mint condition & wasn't expensive.
I really like Joe Stubbs "Keep On Loving Me", Mack Rice's "Baby, I'm Coming Home" & "My Baby", Bennie McCain's "I Don't Want No Part Time Love", Bettye's "You Killed My Love", the Falcons "Has It Happened to You Yet" plus Bobby Williams "Tell It To My Face" & "I'm Depending On You".
No doubt they are all top price items on original US 45's.
