I've been listening to the 3-CD Supremes singles box set, which is really excellent. I resisted buying this for a while, but after buying the sets for the Vandellas [[with the "lost and found" disk) and Temptations, decided to buy this when I found a used copy in LA at Amoeba Records for $40.

So got me to thinking, what is your favorite B-side of the Sups? There were some good ones. Of the early sides, I imagine most people like "Ask Any Girl" as [[I think) it was even on two of their albums.

But I think my favorites are "Always in My Heart" from the early period, and "Going Down for the Third Time" and "Remove This Doubt" from their middle period. I think all three had great vocals by Diane, and dramatic over the top arrangements backing the girls. I love the opening to "Always in My Heart," kind of reminds me of strip music. [[I've never stripped to it, however.)

Of the later sides, prior to Diane leaving the group, I wasn't really a fan of any of the B-sides.

What say you all?

No doubt in my mind: it's "Going Down For The Third Time." Motown 1111 was truly a double A-side issue. If "Going Down" had been released as an A-side, it would have reached the top ten, I think. BTW, I wish it had also been recorded by Martha & The Vandellas. That would have been killer.

60's B-sides:
Going Down For The Third Time
You've Been So Wonderful To Me
Whisper You Love Me Boy

70's B-sides:
Shine On Me
You're What's Missing In My Life

"Going Down For The Third Time" really should have been released on its own. I'm surprised Motown didn't push it as a two-sided hit. It should have been released A-side with something like "I'll Turn To Stone" on the B-side. The timing would have been hard though in-between "The Happening" and "Reflections."

I can't wait for a stereo mix of the mono mix on the expanded Sing HDH.

I thought I was the only one who loved Going Down For The Third Time. I really think it would have been a better A side than In & Out Of Love. Ask Any Girl would have been so great to hear on the radio - but I think it would have been a mistake to release it after Baby Love since there were already millions out there and it was on the album as well. I do think it would have been a top 5'er, however.

Going Down For The Third time was always a favorite. Also, Ask Any Girl.

This is my favorite "B" side. I played it more than the "A" side.
And when there was all the talk of a re-union, I always imagined that this could have been their opening song, coming out together side by side, sharing leads and singing this with probably a few words changed around.

"There's No Stopping Us Now"

There's no stopping us now
Now that we found our way
There's no stopping us now
Our love is here to stay
Foolishly we've been apart
Breaking each others heart
Stubbornness and foolish pride
Caused us to push love aside
The loneliness from being apart
Opened up our eyes
To the love that was always there
Deep inside

Now that we've faced the unknown
And we can't make it alone
We're closer together more now then ever
For now that we've found love
We've got to hold on love

There's no stopping us now
This time love's here to stay
There's no stopping us now
Now we have found our way
The precious hours we have lost
We'll never regain
But together we'll fill the hours that remain
The loneliness we have known
We'll push behind
Together forever
We'll make up for all lost time

Now we're in each others arms
Nothing can do us harm
Nothing can shake us,
Nothing can beak us
We'll be together
Forever and ever

There's no stopping us now
This time love's here to stay
There's no stopping us now
Together we've found the way
Never again shall foolish pride keep us apart
Never again shall stubbornness break our hearts
There's no stopping us now
Now that we've found our way
Would you believe?
There's no stopping us now
Now that love's here to stay
There's no stopping us now
Now that we've...

I only made choices from the period when I started buying Supremes records in 1965:

I never tire of these - I guess they're my Top 5:
Twinkle Twinkle Little Me
Going Down For The Third Time
He's All I Got
I'm In Love Again
Everything Is Good About You

Least liked:
He Holds His Own

Most disappointing choice for B-side:
Time Changes Things [[1962) as flip to Forever Came Today [[1968)

Different but enjoyable:
I'm So Glad I Got Somebody [[Like You Around)

However the most enjoyable were the B-sides that were not from an album when first released:
Everything Is Good About You, He's All I Got, Put Yourself In My Place, Remove This Doubt, There's No Stopping Us Now to name a few and the non-album track for many many years All I Know About You.

they had quite a few good B sides actually

You Bring Back Memories
Time Changes Things
I'm Giving You Your Freedom
He Means the World to Me
Ask Any Girl
There's No Stopping
Going Down for 3rd Time
I Guess I'll Always Love You
The Beginning of the End
Bill When Are You coming Back
But I Love you more
Shine On me
It's So Hard For me To say goodbye
This Is the Story
Over and Over
Give out but don't give up

many of these are songs that i used to dub onto Sups mixed tapes back in the day. now i just pull them into playlists lol

"Going Down" is one of their most exciting and soulful songs...really should have been a single!
I also love "He's All I Got," "All I Know About You," and "Long Gone Lover."

I hate "Always In My Heart." It's really strange and I don't like the additional voices on the record.

Terrific song would have made a great A side - in fact a lot of my favourite 'killer b's' come from the girls, in general Motown 'threw away' a lot of great songs on b sides with all its acts. I always wanted to do a box set of Motown B sides and call it Motown Besides.

I would say that There's No Stopping Us Now and Everything Is Good About You are two of my most favorite Supremes songs. I really think they are gems in their catalogue so it is nice to see a few people listing these two songs

"Everything is Good About You" evidently had a lot of fans, because it was even covered by groups like The Lettermen, in their usual light pop style.

A lot of interesting choices. I guess "Going Down for the 3rd Time" has to be the hands down winner. It is a great song.

Another interesting cut I'm not sure I even played before is on CD 2, "I'm in Love Again." It has Diane singing a little out of her register, a little high, but it gives her voice a very nice yearning quality similar to the tone she employed on "Stop! in the Name of Love." "I'm in Love Again" was a fun discovery on this set for me.

Yes, it was the flip side of "When The Lovelight Starts Shining Through His Eyes." It actually made the Top Five, on its own, on WEEB in Baltimore in early 1964!

After "Ask Any Girl", "Who Could Ever Doubt My Love" is probably my favourite despite fine versions from Brenda Holloway and from the Isley Brothers.

thommg, those two B-sides were played regularly on Boston radio when they were released. I don't recall any other Supremes' B-sides, except for Twinkle Twinkle Little Me, being played almost as much as their respective A-sides.

The Young Folks did get some mild airplay. I think the DJs only played it so they didn't have to play No Matter What Sign You Are. Just kidding!

Billboard reviewed LIHANYG and TNSUN as a double-sided hit. My local record store had TNSUN as the A-side and I pointed out that LIHANYG was listed as the A-side by Billboard. He had to correct his label.

Boston radio also featured More Hits and A' Go-Go when they were released playing many of the songs from those albums. Can't remember if they did it for the Symphony album and I am pretty sure neither HDH nor any later album got the same promotional exposure.

My favorite Supremes B-side was "Bill, When Are You Coming Back" 1970. The B-side to "Up the Ladder to the Roof".

I believe I heard it. They played that song so regularly on Detroit and Toledo radio in early 1970 you would have thought it was a new single release.

I also love "Bill..." and often thought it was worthy of being an A-Side...

My fav B-sides were:

Standing At The Crossroads Of Love
Put Yourself In My Place
There's No Stopping Us Now
All I Know About You
I Guess I'll Always Love You

Personally, I didn't really think the girls' forte was ballads - the best of these Remove This Doubt.

Looking at the list I don't really think any of the B-sides was better than the A-side of the disc they were released on.

What I find interesting is that few have mentioned Always In My Heart B-side to Come See About Me and a few have actually made negative comments about it.

Yet it would appear to be the one that had the most "success" [[The Young Folks excepted).

Record World, one of the Big 3 charts at the time had a #s101-150 listing and AIMH spent a couple of weeks in it reaching #135.

As a matter of interest Children's Christmas Song made their top 100 at #90.

I remember on WKNR in Detroit, where Scott Regen was such a huge fan of "the girls," as he called them, he often played the B-sides. I remember especially hearing "Ask Any Girl" and "Going Down for the Third Time" on the radio before I bought the singles they were coupled with.

I'm wondering if Marv2, another native Detroiter, remembers hearing the B-sides played as well. I'm sure we all listened to WKNR.

Who Could Ever Doubt My Love stands highest for me; I think it's magnificent, a masterpiece.

Very fond also of Everything Is Good About You, which I think can be argued as the quintessential mid-60s Supremes record [[not the *best*, but maybe the one that most "sounds like the Supremes", if that makes sense.)

But then there are so many other excellent choices - Remove This Doubt, Going Down For The Third Time, Always In My Heart, I'm In Love Again, Whisper You Love Me Boy... in fact the 60s Supremes' B-sides would make a very fine compilation CD in their own right.

I remember WKNR Keener 13!!!!! The station dj's were staunch supporters of the girls. Those were the days of great radio.

I've never understood why this wasn't released as an "A" side. It's one of the classic Supremes best tunes.

I agree. I always thought it was A-side material, but, I don't think it exceeded the singles from YCHL - Reflections. In & Out of Love needed to not be an A-side and, on the strength of 5 blockbusters in a row, snuck into the top ten, but really, it helped seal the fate of Forever Came Today. Going Down would have been an ideal follow up to The Happening, but I don't think it's as strong as Reflections. Remember, Gordy only wanted 1's out on them, silly as it sounds, and I don't think anyone thought it was a #1. Compared to In & Out Of Love, it's record of the decade.

I'm thinking that if the phrase 'going down' was already a sexual phrase in 1966, it may have given some folks pause about this being an A side..sorry..mind always in the gutter
