The
Ultimate Experience
|
|
7018 West Warren, Detroit
|
I now find that the most
rewarding experience of all is to visit the sites where it
all happened.
Driving through the
streets of Detroit, with some sixties soul in the tape
machine, is something else! You
could also visit Honest?John's (sic) on Field Street
and listen to Edwin Starr's 'Back street', Linda Griner's
'My smile is just a frown' or The Isley Brothers 'Got to
have you back'. Ok, the juke box takes compact discs these
days but who cares? The locals turn their heads and you get
the chance to tell them about that old studio up on West
Davison. They then tell you that the guy in the corner
worked for Magic City on Grand River, and your day is made! This
is Harry Dhesi from Glasgow examining the site of the McCoy
Recording Company on West Warren. Sadly,
the building was long gone.
Notes thanks to David Meikle.
