Esther Gordy Edwards

2648 West Grand Boulevard

Esther Gordy was head of ITMI (International Talent Management Inc.) and is the sister of Berry Gordy.

Esther started out as a book-keeper with the company and was married to an accountant.

It was soon established, however, that artists careers would need managing and tours organising. Berry felt that Esther would be tailor made for the job and called the department ITMI.

We met Esther twice at the museum and she gave us a couple of hours of her time.

Without any prompting whatsoever, she spoke fondly of Dave Godin, whose input to the British, and indeed worldwide Soul Scene, should never be understated.

On a lighter note she recalled Herman of Herman's Hermits standing outside the building, peering through the glass window. When approached, he spoke of his love of the Motown sound. He would have been in Detroit on tour, possibly at the Olympia or the Grande.

Esther also gave us a special showing of the video which was played in the Henry Ford Museum for so many years.

Notes thanks to David Meikle
