A few days ago [[June 30th to be exact) marked the 20th anniversary of the night we lost the incomparable Phyllis Hyman. Not only that, but her 66th birthday would have been coming up on Monday, July 6th.
Considering that some of her peers [[Dionne, Patti, Melba, etc.) are still going strong, it is mind-boggling to think of the incredible music she could have given us during this past 20 years and maybe well into the future. Sadly her demons overtook her, but she certainly left us with an amazing array of songs that are still relevant today.
She could tell a story within a song better than anyone before or since. I personally am sooooo very thankful to the producers and record company personnel who gave us such a wonderful assortment of releases in the years since her passing. Apparently all the vaults are finally emptied, but I cannot think of any artist who was honored so thoroughly and completely after their passing, and each and every release was welcomed gratefully.
I hope you are resting in peace, you dear Sophisticated Lady! We miss you!
