"Nightflight" Tue April 5, 9P-12M ET:Original versions of Popular Covers!

Hello America! Tonight I'm going to revisit a theme that I presented quite a while back.
I'm a person who generally enjoys the original versions of songs as opposed to cover versions. Of course, there is that rarity, when the cover is as good if not better, but I DO find that to be a rarity....but that's me!

That being said, I have found quite a number of original versions that are quite rare...not at all as well known as their cover versions. Doing the research on tonight's show, I was shocked at what I found as far as by whom and when the actual originals were recorded.

So tonight, be it Motown, Pop, Soul, rock or otherwise, "Original Versions of Popular Covers"....on "Nightflight"....on WOMR 92.1 FM Provincetown and WFMR 91.3 FM Orleans
and streaming live worldwide in digital stereo at www.womr.org
    Thanks!
    John

    Hi All,
If you go to and search for 'Uncovered' you find a double cd, 38 cuts a little way down on the first page. It is a pretty neat compilation.

I'm not sure why the link did not post but it is www.amazon.co.uk

Yeah...the Spinners did the first version about 1 yr before JMC.

Did the Brothers Four record anything first or did always cover other folk artist's material? One of the Brothers Four is married to Loni Anderson.

Why The Supremes version was never released as a single boggles my mind. What was Motown thinking? Oh well.

And of course there's The Supremes and Four Tops version from their first Magnificent 7 album released at the same time as New Ways.

This original Spinners version sounds weak...however the remix on their 1973 [[?) LP from Motown "Best Of The Spinners", sounding somewhat similar to their Atlantic releases, is the one I prefer.

    Have a good show, John.

    Ah, Jackie & Johnny???!!!

Have u ever gone to have them?

Chuck Negron heard Jennifer Warnes sing Easy To Be Hard and he immediately presented it to Three Dog Night to record. They buried her version on the charts and she still hates him. It was on the Hair cast album over a year before that. Not sure why these west coast folks took so long to catch on to it.

I think Andy did it in 1969 on the Happy Heart album. I have it as part of a two-fer cd.
