    Derek martin

A nice one from a male vocalist who was born in Detroit. He didn't have a lot of chart hits, but his version of this slow jam, written by Teddy Randazzo - is definitive and has been covered by Darrell Banks and Nancy Wilson. Are there any other covers of You Better Go?

He was a member of The Five Jets, who had some success in the mid '50s. He came to New York with other group members while they were working for King's DeLuxe Records in the late '50s.

He also had minor hits in the mid '60s with "Sly Girl" on Tuba Records, and "Count To Ten" on Sue Records in addition to "You Better Go".

Derek has lived in France for many years.
He still plays live shows & came over to the UK to play Ady C's Cleethorpes Weekender last year .......... and he put on a great performance.
There should still be clips up on youtube.

I've been playing his hits CD in the car the last few days. I really like the airy type sound of his female background singers on a few of the selections on the CD.

This superb mid-seventies track for All Platinum is what first turned me on to Derek Martin. This was also done by Chuck Jackson, one of my all-time heroes, but I think Martin does it better, and there's not many times Jackson can be bettered!

    Hello Moe,
    Nice to re-connect with you!
Yes, Derek has that edgy voice. So many good songs, after "You Better Go" [[which I wore out back in 1967), my favorite is "I Won't Cry Anymore", course I have it by many [[including Jimmy's 1951 Roost recording of it). I also love "You Blew It" and "Your Daddy Wants His Baby Back".

Along with "You Better Go," I really like "Your Daddy Wants His Baby Back" and "I Won't Cry Anymore." Love the female singer in the background.
