All In the FAMILY - Dance Party!?

I was watching a rerun of "All In the Family"; the episode was titled "Lionel's Engagement". During the party scene, Gloria walks in with an armful of records to be played at the party. Lo an behold, the album at the top of the stack is none other than MATV's "Dance Party".

That album was released in 1965; the episode originally aired on 2/9/74.

I wonder why they used an album that was almost 9 years old.

Gary, I would say they used Martha & The Vandellas' "Dance Party" LP because Motown is timeless. And that LP has some of Motown's hottest dance tracks -- "Dancing In The Street", "Wild One", "Nowhere To Run", and "Motoring".

Unless the album was mentioned in the script, I doubt they even thought about it. They probably sent an intern out to get some albums and this is what they brought back.

The show was filmed in Los Angeles. Many of the studios there have a Prop warehouse. Prop Masters and Set Decorators usually go there and pull what they need and sign it out for a period of time. The materials are used then returned and the production is billed for the use. My guess is that someone went into the bin of albums and pulled anything that look like a record played at a party. I don't know that all the prop records would be up to current date.

Similarly, in Paul Schrader's Blue Collar [1978], a woman at a party is seen holding an album cover on a couch. It's Diana Ross's Everything Is Everything, which was a smooth 8 years old by the time the film was released. Given what transpires next, they were probably using it to do blow.

Vermettya never got another role that I know of but she did get some more big screen
time when she and the group were filmed in performance in the Max Julien film The Mack...

I wouldn't be surprised if Archie owned a copy of "Sammy Davis, Jr. - Something for Everyone", lol!

In the 1970 film of The Boys in the Band, before they do the famous line dance to “Heat Wave,” one of the guys picks up the Martha and the Vandellas Live album to play it, which was just so wrong. Of course I noticed it immediately but I suppose not that many other folks did.
In the 2020 remake, the correct album cover was used, and I can only wonder why it wasn’t used in the first film. I’d have thought it would have been fairly easy for the prop-master to have found.

I've never heard of Mrs. Miller until now and I wouldn't be surprised if the Edith Bunker character's singing was a riff on Mrs. Miller's singing.
