Too much sugar for a dime indeed!..Though most of them I know there are several here I'd
never heard of til yesterday which made me really curious about whatever happened to
acts like the Shondells and Playgirls. Also who were the members and what did they look like? Guess I'v got some googling to do. And Tina Robin caught me off guard too; darling had
a throat on her...wonder who were her back up singers, sounded almost like The Cookies but that could just be my biases talking to me...anyway, great stuff....Only girls singing
could take me away from the jazz piano I usually listen to on a Sunday morning...

It's quite possible that it may be the Cookies and the reason I say that is not because I have the greatest ear when it comes to who's doing b/g on what, but the connection here is Carole King & Gerry Goffin who wrote the Tina Robin tune and were also working and producing tracks for the Cookies around the same time. Have fun googling, Splanky!

No place like Motown is correct. I would add, it was a frequent practice in the 50's and early 60's for groups to do backing vocals with no credit or credit given to other groups. Harvey Fuqua had the Moonglows back him on a record where credit was given to another group. Eugene Pitt was backed by The Cadillacs, not the Jive Five on "Rain".

Lead vocals were switched sometimes. Eugene Pitt sang lead on a record credited to the Corvairs because the lead singer couldn't get the melody. Pitt later recorded the same song with his own group and put the song out as The Jive Five.

I'm about halfway through this list. The Taffy's, Can't We Be Friends, remind me of when Shirley, Barbara and I would sit around singing for our own enjoyment and Shirley had the lead singers voice. Since they were on Cameo Parkway were they from Philly? If so, their music never got played to my strong recollection.

My voice was similar to the Shondells song, Ooo Sometimes. Boy these songs take me back!

It has been said that the Taffys hailed from Philly probably because they recorded for Cameo/Parkway. There's not much out there other than a mention that two members from the Taffys also recorded w/ the Swans. Per the liner notes from the "Philly Soul Girls" CD I own, two of the members from the Swans were sisters Jean & Tina Thomas and were also known as the Sweet Three from Camden, NJ.
