The Clay Cole Show [[1960's TV)

The Clay Cole Show [[1959–1968) was a music television show based in New York that seemed to be quite innovative but didn't really garner as much praise as say 'American Bandstand'.
The show had a few variations in name and when the original station that broadcast it [[WNTA-TV) was sold in 1963, it moved over onto WPIX-TV.
There it lasted for another 6 years and helped usher in the 'British Invasion' [[I believe that the Who and Rolling Stones made their US TV debuts on the show).
BUT IN ADDITION ........ the show staged a full 1 hour long Motown Special that was said to be quite groundbreaking at the time [[for US TV).

When Clay Cole took a break from presenting the show [[to have a short holiday) recording artists such as Skip Cunningham were brought in as replacement hosts [[August 65). Clay didn't like the way pop music was going by 68 and so quit the show. It seems that just about all the tapes were wiped many years ago, so little evidence remains today of its content.

Anyone here remember the show & any highlights they'd care to share ?
BUT MY MAIN QUESTION IS ........ when was the Motown Special staged & who appeared live on that show ??

Clay Cole, off the back of his DJing & TV show, got to appear in a film and had some 45's out .....

    Attachment 6253

He was also MC for a week long package put on at the Apollo Theatre in 1961 .... this starring Chubby Checker, the Drifters, the Isley Bros & more.
Not bad for a young white guy !!!

Clay Cole had started out as a child actor before getting into DJing & MCing.
He quit the show in December 1967, disillusioned with the way pop music was going. He handed over to a new host and it became 'the Peter Martin Show'.

Done some more checking on-line & it seems likely that the Motown Special was screened around February 1967. Cole & his TV crew were due to visit Detroit to film interviews with Motown execs & artists that January ........
The usual format of his show was to have 5 or so live acts on and break up their performances with shots of kids dancing in the studio to some of the latest records.
I guess that for the Motown Special, some live acts were in the NY studio, Motown 45 cuts were played off records for the studio dancers and taped footage from the Detroit visit was also used.

Pity that a copy of that show doesn't seem to still exist.

Soul Sister, when was that live show at the Paramount staged; 1963 / 64 ?
How did it work when a film & live show were both featured on the same theatre show back in the day ??
I guess the film was shown first, then there was a 10 - 15 minute 'comfort break' before the live show started .... is that correct ???
If so, it must have made for a long night [[4 hours in length I'd guess & needing a start before 7pm).

    jsmith,
Sorry I wasn't at the show you posted. I have been to a live taping of a stage show or two, the best was James Brown at the Apollo. They filmed the show just the way it was always presented, I mean the acts just did their thing and the show was taped not like today with all the big production to make it perfect for t.v. as in the PBS specials or any t.v. show today for that matter. No breaks. In the case of James Brown being at the Apollo for a week straight they taped actually several days maybe used the best footage from them. No breaks, no hair, no make-up, no big production just raw as it was.

OH! Re-reading your post, lol, if you meant shown a film the same day as the live show, I don't remember ever seeing that. They were probably actually on different days as far as the Paramount goes.

The Apollo had four or five shows a day but I don't remember all the theaters having that many. Some may have, it was sooo long ago, lol.

At the Regal in Chicago, it was the film first [[usually terrible) then the show. Film/show. Weekdays there'd be 3 shows, weekends 5.

The show @ the Paramount that starred Mary Wells, Ronnie Dove, the Marvelettes, Inez & Charlie Fox & the Gypsies [[+ the film was 'Harlow').

Thanks for that great list, CM. Wow...they are some rare artists listed on there that I didn't know appeared on Clay's show like Helena Ferguson and one of my favs, Laura Nyro. I see that many Motown artists appeared on his show throughout 1967 - from Chris Clark to Tammi Terrell to R. Dean Taylor. What a shame that those tapes were destroyed.

Some great guests on the show ..... Helena Ferguson, Chris Clark, Tammi Terrell, Chuck Jackson, Lit Anthony, Maxine Brown, DEAN PARRISH, Mongo Santamaria, Ramsey Lewis, Joe Cuba, Dee Dee Sharp, Tommy Hunt, Roy Hamilton, the Exciters, Christine Cooper, Lenny Welch, Deon Jackson, Percy Sledge, the Royalettes, Robert Parker, Bobby Hebb, Five Stairsteps, Dee Dee Warwick, Bunny Sigler, Patti LaBelle, Jay & Techniques, Brenda Holloway, Marvelettes, Jackie Wilson, Duprees, Shirelles, Isley Bros & all the top Motown acts.
Its suprising no one thought to keep any of those tapes.

It's tragic if all those tapes are gone, some great history there.

Classic Master, where did those lists of guests on the show come from ??

....... AND a question for whoever has it / has read it .......
Is Clay's book [[Sh-Boom) worth getting [[I'd only be interested in any soul content not details of the pop stuff or his earlier acting exploits).

    @jsmith,
I do have Clay's book but have not read it. I have too many books I never read just don't have the time, they will be good to read down the line in old age, lol...

Well many thanks for passing the info along.
It's scarey just how much info like this is lost forever now.
If you want to find out who was on at places like the Apollo & 20 Grand you can still track much of the info down, but for 'lesser venues' it is much harder.
Details on soul shows staged at most other NY soul venues [[theatres, clubs) are much more ellusive. The same goes for venues in many other US cities.

    "Everybody" played the Apollo, lol.

I have some stuff on Cleveland Clubs, Jimmy played at many, in some cases produced the shows.

N.Y.~ off the top of my head The Go Go Loungue [[Congers), The Riviera Lounge [[Yonkers), The Factory [[Bronx), Maxim's [[Bronx), Wagaon Wheel [[45th Street, Manhattan), Peppermint Lounge [[45th Street, Manhattan), the following all N.Y.C.: Metropol, Round Table, Trudi Heller's Trik, The Cheetah, the following all Harlem: Palm Cafe, Small's Paradise, Baby Grand, more later, no time right now.

It was on Clay Cole that the Rolling Stones made their American TV debut. Too bad these tapes are gone.
