    RIP Terry Callier, 1945-2012

One of the most criminally underrated singers [[IMO) of our time, the soulful and versatile Terry Callier, has passed away at the age of 67. He died yesterday [[10/28) at his home in Chicago. No announcement yet on the official cause of death, although reports are he had been ill for some time. Links:

These articles provide a good rundown of Terry's career, which began in the early '60s and started with recordings for Chess Records, including two tracks that are popular in the Northern/Modern Soul scenes, "Look At Me Now" from 1963 and "Ordinary Joe" from 1973. [[Both are dynamite songs, and really should have been popular with music fans everywhere.)

Callier got into folk and jazz in the early '60s, which led to the key Chess LP in 1964, "The New Folk Sound of Terry Callier." that was the first of 5 major albums between 1964-1978, including "Occasional Rain" from 1972.

After his 1978 album "Turn You To Love," he hung it up for nearly 20 years to raise his daughter and work at the University of Chicago as a computer programmer. The his music career resurrected in 1991, when the Acid Jazz label in London re-released the single "I Don't Want to See Myself [[Without You)." That single sparked a renewed interest in Callier, and led him to resume performances in the U.K., Europe and eventually the U.S. He released the well-received album "Timepeace" in 1998 [[which won an award from the United Nations!), and worked/toured with Beth Orton. His final album, "Hidden Conversations," was produced by Massive Attack and released in 2009.

I don't know Terry Callier's music as well as I should, but intend to change that soon.

RIP Mr. Callier, thank you for the all the great music. And with all due respect, you were no Ordinary Joe.

Been a fan since I bought the Album "Occasional Rain" in 1972 & the equally excellent "What Color Is Love" the following year, which includes my particular favourite "Ho Tsing Mee [[A Song of the Sun)" since then I've picked up everything I've come across by him.

Terry Callier R.I.P. and condolences to friends & family

Oh no, I just pulled the Timepeace CD out to download to my Ipod. The last time I saw Mr. Callier was at the Bottom Line in NYC and after the concert, I thanked him for warming my heart, and he said always stay beautiful! Thank you Mr. Callier for blessing me with your beautiful music all these years. My condolences to the family.

    That's a real shame.

I absolutely loved African Violet. It was a superb track.

    Rest In Peace Mr Callier.

I saw Terry Callier live for the first time in London sometime in the early 90s. He blew me away with the serenity and beauty of his voice that dominated the auditorium. I 've seen him many times since and never has he disappointed. The man was a musical genius possessing a rare as a beeswing voice of beauty and timbre.

My first recollection of Terry callier was seeing his name on the writing credits for songs from some of the major Chicago artists of the 60s. Check out The Dells 'The Love We Had Stays On My Mind', a beautiful song that has remained a favourite through all these years. When he started recording albums I bought them all, 'Fire on Ice' & 'What Color Is Love' are breath takingly good. Mr Callier was a deeply spiritual person who was always humble when I saw him and songs such as 'African Violent' 'I'd Rather be with You' 'Turn You To Love' 'Sign of The Times' really should be standards.

I don't know why this beautiful man remained under the radar for a mainstream audience especially in his home of the USA. America is such a welcoming country yet sometimes it neglects the musical geniuses that they should praise. I think maybe he was difficult to program for the radio as he started as a folk singer and went through different genres all his career. He was heavily influenced by Jazz but always there was more to the music - funk, soul and latterly electronica.

Mr Callier could move you - really move you and I'm feeling sad at his passing. My condolences to those that knew him.

At least you're honest, Nosey. I know who Terry Callier was and have some of his work, but I'd be lying if I said I was a major fan. May he rest in peace.

The thing is, I know him primarily from the two big Northern soul tunes, as well as one of my fave Dells tunes...sad that it takes his passing to bring out the desire to hear more of his work. RIP, Terry, and thank you...

    Best,

    Mark

Turn You to Love gave me goosebumps. Nice and sensual; a nice one to dance off of as a parting gift for my boo. [[smile)
