The New Supremes: February 1971 in Jet Magazine

This picture was found while browsing through the Jet Magazine section of Google Books. There is an interesting article that can be enjoyed while looking back to see if things turned out the way they were predicted. The photo is not one I'm familiar with.

I remember that issue when it arrived in the mail all those years ago. "Jet" was "the bible" to us back then.

    "STONED LOVE."
I mean you never hear Jean say "STONED" in the track at all. I do recall this issue of JET however. It was a strange time. The second new Supremes album after Jean took over lead after Diana left. The split itself was a challenge for the group ,Diane and the fans. Were you a fan of the Supremes with Diane ,or were you a fan of Diana & The Supremes. Now you had two acts to deal with. Could Diana stand alone without The Supremes? Could The Supremes still be as supreme-ess as they were without Diana? That was the quetion. The New Ways But Love Stays lp was released in the time that "concept" lp's were popular. The first three tracks of side 1 are segued concept style, like M.G. ,WGO , Stevies I.V. ,etc. Together We Can Make Such Sweet Music , Stoned Love and It's Time To Break Down, all mixed to be listened in sequence. The listing on the lp cover and lp label may have been a typo or ............maybe have been actually intended as a "description of the songs subject" ,which is a love as strong as stone. That of course is how one wants to look at it ,but to have the opportunity to view these historic documents of the time is priceless.

Very interesting find, what a time capsule. Intersting to see a picture of Charles Rangel when he was just starting out in Congress back in 71. He's still there! And that little story about Secretary of Housing George Romney thinking of resigning from the Nixon admin and now his son is running for President. The Supremes story was interesting in the focus on race, civil rights and opinions about the Panthers. I remember Mary discussing in Supreme Faith about how outspoken Jean was at that time which encouraged Mary and Cindy to speak out more, though they weren't taken as seriously as Jean.

Sorry, I didn't pay any attention to how Stone Love was spelled or misspelled.
