This does look like an interesting set - thanks for finding it Calv. Apart from anything else, it seems to have the only known recording of Marv Johnson singing 'abraham, martin & john' from May 1970, around the time it was a big hit here in the UK for Marvin Gaye.

There are sound clips available on Juno - as far as the motown tracks go, they all have that UK "sound" of the era in terms of backing instrumental and singers
[listen to artists like Dusty and Cilla perform US soul hits on their TV shows and you'll know what I mean], but this has a certain charm if you grew up with it - just don't expect the Snakepit.

That's why I'm not buying it. Thanks for the warning about the crappy BBC backing tracks. So no thanks, it's not for me.

I just love Johnny Johnson and The Bandwagon. Now "If You Love Her" by The Showstoppers - is that the Vancouvers song? That would be interesting.

    Looks like a decent set.

BBC TV shows always served US soul singers / groups well [[unlike BBC radio up to 1968).
It is a GREAT PITY though that so few of the live show recordings done by soul / Motown acts on RSG [[Ready Steady Go) were kept & so still exist.
BUT THEN, 90%+ of all US soul related TV show footage was destroyed too.

So many thanks Calv21. Have immediately ordered this. OF COURSE it’s not the Funk Bros but nor would it be if you saw these live in the US or elsewhere. And UK musicians can produce creditable tracks – just listen to the CD “Dusty Sings Soul”. I can’t wait to hear these original artists doing their own thing live on their own songs and others. Plus interviews! Can’t wait for delivery. What a buzz.

All these were sung in real time and "live"? What a grand concept!

Can't seem to find this set on any sites that will easily deliver to the US without charging an arm and a leg. Anyone in the US have a site they can share?

I`ve just ordered mine.I`ve heard Gladys Knight & the Pips "Grapevine" and it is good.It will be worth just for the Marv Johnson songs. He could be singing to a studio tape.

Well it’s arrived and lives up to all expectations. The backings are fine, I’ve heard worse in the US at House Of Blues, small clubs & exhibition performances. And some performers brought their rhythm section over with them anyway. Nothing stands out to me as substandard.
Maxine Brown doing I Was Made To Love Her, Tami Lynn giving What’s Going On are unexpected pleasures but Marv Johnson’s version of Abraham, Martin & John plus Mary Wells’ rocking arrangement of You Beat Me To The Punch are standouts for me. And what a kick to hear Martha’s I Gotta Let Him Go sung live & faithful to the record. Thanks again Calv1971 for the heads-up.

Mine's arrived as well - I've still got the pleasure of listening to it all to come.

I`m enjoying mine. It`s nice to hear Gladys live on "Take Me In Your Arms And Love Me" and "Just Walk In My Shoes".Worth admission for those.
