The Complete Motown Singles Volume 12

Like many of us on this forum, I hope that the final installment of this great set will eventually see the light of day, and that the problems delaying this series, whatever they are, can be resiolved. However, I read in a recent post from Harry Weinger that the series might just end at Volume 11.

If the worst senario does happen, then it would be fantastic if, after the announcement, the official track listing that was planned for this was made public. I know we've seen lists of what people THINK might be included, but I for one would like the official take on this, the unreleased tracks that were to be included, the stereo and/or mono promos etc., etc. Why? My appetite for this has been whetted by the 11 previous volumes and this is the last part of the originally planned series.

If the series ends at Volume 11, I think that would be a serious breach. I bought all the other volumes, and loved them, with the understanding, trusting, that the series would end in 1972 when Motown officially moved to LA. Now, comes the talk that someone is going back on their word. I hope this is a rumor and it is wrong. Personally, I'd rather that they put out volumes 12A and 12 B without the Stevie Wonder tracks [[if that is the holdup) and just notate them in the book.

That would be great! I'd be the first to order...even without the Stevie Wonder tracks. I think the series is exceptional! Harry and his crew did an excellent job.

We included the tracks scheduled for Volume 12A in the latest edition of Don't Forget The Motor City [[http://www.dftmc.info/) as that volume was all but completed when the whistle blew [[and could be out in a trice if it blew a second time for us to go back to work). The list for 12B had not been nailed down at that time.

No, Jimi, Motown [[Universal Music, these days!) do NOT "own everything". A few of the more obscure 45s have been omitted from earlier volumes in the series, and their absence duly noted, on account of licensing problems.

I'm not able to comment on the specific problems with Volume 12, but as recently as last week I was discussing the issues with Harry Weinger, and can assure you we haven't abandoned the project. It's on hold.

i know, you know too probably, that most people on sdf understand you have a job on your hands bringing vol12 to fruition.
you also know that as a bunch we are impatient.
but in any walk of life what you want and what you get isnt always possible.the default for this world is SNAFU!
if we get a vol 12 it will be down to skillful negotiations.if we dont, its one of those things.
BUT I STILL WANT VOL 12! CHEERS KEITH

Thanks Keith. The released titles are no problem, but any pointers as to where I might find the info on MoWest 5010?

i too would like to know where on the above listed link i can find the track listings for vol. 12a. it is not apparent to me! also, i once wrote hippo asking if a index/catalogue, listing all the songs by year, artist, label would be available once the series was complete. do you know how hard it is to have to look in each volume's index if you have no idea what year the song came out? at the time i asked [[years ago!), they emailed back saying there would be a complete index/catalogue. i have written several times since, and never receive a reply. they seem to not be an overly helpful company considering the money i have poured into the [[almost?) entire set. and i for one would be overjoyed if this project could make it all the through 1972. if hippo can't get all of the rights, then i wholeheartedly agree that the unavailable songs be listed in order in the text pages of each volume, with a note that are not contained on the discs themselves. what a shame to be so close to completing this fantastic project, and so unable to come up with a solution that people here are already willing, even eager to accept. is there something my feeble brain is not considering?

booty, I have no information for titles scheduled for MoWest 5010, nor any for 5024 or 5049, come to that. If you or anyone else has such information, please let me know.

Ritchie and I were rather preening ourselves over the fact that this edition of DFTMC contains an index by Artist as well as by Title - an immense amount of extra work for Ritchie, which accounts for the delay in producing the new edition. Maybe an index by Release will feature in future editions, if Ritchie can stand it.

theboyfromxtown is absolutely correct in pointing to that email address as where to write to if you want official information about Motown releases past present and [[maybe) future.

I would be happy to have it even if they scrap Stevie Wonder and a few other songs for obscure reasons; we don't need the Stevie Wonder songs anyways; we all have them.

Who's "we"? The idea is to get the single versions out there, and not all of the Stevie Wonder single versions are.

I believe that TCMS12 is never going happen. It's supposed to be 'complete singles' and there'd be several missing not just Stevie as many of the Rare Earth label tracks were leased.

It's not too flawed for me to get it out with Stevie or not and without all the Rare Earth tracks. I "think" I'd rather it it without the aforementioned than not at all.

According to my files these were the US Motown single releases in '72. It's not an official list so don't shoot me if there are any errors!

Bob Babbit's Gospel Truth/ Running Like A Rabbit was scheduled for Soul 35101, but not released. As the tracks were completed in September and August 1972, that might also be included.

As the record wasn't released, isn't the recording date more important? I would expect it to be included if only because 1972 is the final volume.

I'm only going on the info I have gathered over the years. It was scheduled for '73 anyway it's all really academic at this time.

I wonder what that is all about? Is it record companies chasing videos off youtube? Or is it the artist? Or do the people remove them for other reasons?

  29. #29
I don't know but it's odd when there's two videos of the same song on YT but only one gets removed!
