I believe he had been ailing for some time.. I had many interactions with Eli through the years... I'm so sorry to hear about this. Bobby Eli was a valuable part of The Philly Soul Sound in the '70s as well as a contributor to the Soulful Detroit Forum. Rest In Music, Power & Peace Bobby Eli.

My sincere condolences to Vonnie Eli and family. Bobby was pretty cool. Many talks with him over the years. He wrote some great music like "Sideshow", "Just Don't Wanna Be Lonely" and played guitar on most of the Philly Int'l Soundtrack. Huge loss here. Bobby's roots go deep in the world of R&B. A long time member of the famed MFSB, the Funk Brothers of the Philly Sound. For years Bobby was a valued member of Soulful Detroit, generously sharing his experiences in the music business. He was a naturally funny guy who would get me laughing hysterically on our many phone conversations.Bobby will be missed in so many ways. My thoughts go out to his bride, Vonnie, during this difficult time for her. Rest well Bobby, knowing you left this world in a little better place before moving on to your reward. You did good Bobby.

Bobby was one of the big contributors to Soulful Detroit's success over the first half of its history, and I learned a lot about the music industry from him and the other music creators during that time. His musicianship helped form as new genre of Soul music during the 1970s, rivalling that of motown. He will certainly be missed by a lot of people.

Absolutely! I probably bought some of those products that "fell off the truck" at little "Ma and Pa" "fly by night" "discount stores", without even knowing it, because their prices were too good to pass up.

Too many soul legends are leaving us, without putting their stories down on paper. I'm desperate to get a biography from Garnett Mimms -- but as he's renounced secular music & everything that goes with it, I'm not hopeful.

This has been awful news. Bobby's contribution to SoulfulDetroit was extraordinary. Those early threads were just wonderful with his knowledge and humour. His song writing, musicianship and productions were exquisite. He still inspires me now.

When I came back from Philly after recording/writing with Bobby in 2008, I was all fired up to write some news songs. I started my 'Make Five' album and released it in 2013. It was basic, hurried and all instrumentals. I was hoping Bobby could do some guitar work for me, but he had loads of studio commitments, so did things a different way. One of the tracks called 'Walk Away The Winner' has an interesting history and I decided to resurrect the track in 2022/3 and spend more time on it and also record a vocal.

With Bobby's passing, I have decided to dedicate WATW to Bobby after all that he taught me from the time first seeing his name on a record in 1974, to chatting with him on the phone in 2002/3, after he gave me his phone number on soulfuldetroit and then meeting him in 2003 at his home, then at Studio A 'The SoulfulTale of Two Cities' session in Detroit/2006, to then actually writing with him in his studio and producing 'Double Exposure' and 'Chiquita Green' in 2008. He inspired me when I was in my teens and still does today. When I am doing my 70s Philly style music stuff, I think about him all the time. 'What would Bobby do here' for example! I knew he valued some of my suggestions on the Chiquita Green track we did. I remember saying to him in the studio when we were writing 'There I go falling in love again', 'it needs a harpsichord and some pizzicato strings and hey presto!...he put them on.

Whilst 'Walk Away The Winner' has no Philly musicians on, it has a mid 70s Philly style groove. The 'Sounds like vinyl voc mix 11' is on YouTube and billed as The Formellas/CDO if anybody wants to hear it. Once the album is released this year or next, I'll write something about Bobby for the sleeve note/pressers. I'll do a few mixes and target the Music Supervisors with them. Bobby contributed much to SoulfulDetroit in its infancy. Through this forum I met, co wrote and ended up in a studio with Dennis Coffey/Detroit and Bobby Eli/Philadelphia in 2008 watching how they did it! I am forever grateful to them both and indeed SoulfulDetroit.
