    Artist: VALLI, FRANKIE
    Title: "I'm Gonna Love You"

    Producer: Charles Calello
From: "Lady Put The Light Out" LP
    Label: Private Stock
    Released: 1978

[Note: I'll admit I had to stretch a bit to include this one. It was written by Barry Mann & Cynthia Weil, and produced by Charles Calello. Van McCoy, however, recorded a beautiful vocal version on his "The Disco Kid" album. Whenever I hear Frankie's version of "I'm Gonna Love You", it reminds me of Van's rendition. With that in mind, how could I not include Frankie's version, too?]

That's a pretty version, Sansradio. It's amazing, yet not at all surprising, how many artists have covered Van's songs. I wish I had a dollar for every artist who has covered Van's "Stay Awhile With Me". It's nearly the equivalent of Motown's "For Once In My Life", although to a lesser degree.

Yeah, Boogie, it was picked as a sure-fire hit, but probably got no airplay. Such is the case with far too many of Van's productions. Thank Heaven; despite that, he's fondly remembered and highly regarded for the quality of his countless compositions and productions.

I'd never heard the Zulema version of "Giving Up" before now. The instrumental strips the pathos right out of it and I don't think it really supports Zulema's vocal. I think it would have worked really well as an instrumental, though. It's a vibrant and well played arrangement.

Funny, I was unable to find an audio link for Zulema's "Giving Up" when I created this thread, smallworld. But, this time, it popped up immediately upon my first search. Go figure!

    ZULEMA
    "Giving Up"
    https://youtu.be/H0fIoSsuIEQ

It's true, Zulema's uptempo dance-track version makes it kinda seem like a happy tra-la-la song, although I do like it.

Had Van produced Zulema's version, he would have surely done so in a way that would have achieved perfection -- probably slow-to-mid-tempo, but not uptempo [[like the above).

PS: Hey, smallworld -- did you notice who produced Zulema's version of "Giving Up"? None other than Motown's Bobby Taylor!

thank you for encouraging me to listen Gary. I haven't gotten past this first song, keep re-listening, but I will!

I very much like her disciplined voice. Interestingly I just recently started listening to Ronnie Dyson , and I hear something similar in the two. Controlled, exact.

The A-side is a nice Northern soul dancer. Reed is known for several records on the Northern soul scene, including the one-off single for Bell which was mentioned earlier. He cut a song for the legendary Washington, D.C. label Shrine, which was unissued until it came out on a CD on the UK Kent label. His other known release is "You Are", which originally came out locally on the Claytown label before Brunswick picked it up.

You're very welcome, Boogie! I knew you would love it! I'm confident that anyone who gives it a listen will like it as well. You'll be glad to know that the entire album is excellent [[despite the fact there are only 6 or 7 songs). Sharon Ridley leaves you wishing that Van had recorded much more on her than just this one album. [[This album was also issued on the Phil L.A. Of Soul label with no photo of Sharon on the cover.) CD-wise, the Sussex label version is the one that made it to CD, as have [[I think) all of the Sussex roster of artists [[Faith, Hope & Charity, Creative Source, etc.)

PS: Boogie, I think I know what you mean about Sharon's voice and Ronnie Dyson's voice of which both are super-impressive. [NOTE: Be sure to check out Ronnie's "One Man Band" CD. It's an outstanding release. The best tracks [[IMO) are the ones produced by Thom Bell -- especially "Give In To Love". Ronnie and the Sweethearts Of Sigma's pleas will rip out yout heart and send it sailing! In fact, here -- let me make it easy for you: Fasten your heart's seatbelt!

Mark, other than Gladys Knight & The Pips I wasn't aware that Bobby Reed nor anyone else had recorded a version of Van McCoy's "Home Is Where The Heart Is". I tried to find the link for Bobby's version, but it wasn't to be found in YouTube, nor was "You".

No, Boogie, I didn't notice it, but I know that song and I love it. It's pure Philly Soul which I know I have in my CD collection. I'll have to go into my Word Processor and search for the title to find out who the group is. I'll do it tomorrow when it's not so late.
