She is such an underrated song bird. There aren't many singers like her still around.
^BIG time, SB! You know, I gotta say that I was a day-one Chanté fan...until I saw her antics on "R&B Divas" a few years back. She totally turned me off. This performance is so out of this universe, though, that all is forgiven. I mean, how could I stay mad after she ate like that?
One of the great underrated singers in R&B/Soul. Gorgeous voice and beautiful to look at. A superstar that never happened. I was a MASSIVE fan of "Precious" and "A Love Supreme." In the early 90s, I really believed she would be in the Mariah/Toni/Celine commercial stratosphere. She just didn't have a strong, creative hand guiding her career.
What a flawless performance. There's some great footage of her and Keith Washington on facebook from a performance in Detroit a few weeks ago.
I always thought that Chante was too talented to be on R&B Divas. That series did not do any of the singers any favors, but I still love her voice. I was also a fan from day one and I've purchased all of her releases, and downloaded a number of her one off singles as well.
Love Chante. I wore her debut album out. Such a great voice. I saw her in concert a few years ago- pre pandemic. She sounds great live- that was until she tried to hit those whistle notes. It was bad. It was so cringe worthy, I felt bad for her. She should have not attempted those notes live. At least she didn’t use prerecorded whistle notes. Other than that she was fantastic.
This performance is great. She sounded the same when I saw her. It’s just that on the day I saw her she couldn’t hit the whistle notes. Regarding that reality show she was on, I watched only for her. Maybe I’m biased because I like her, but she wasn’t the problem. It was Leela James. She was such a hater.
That reality show was completely beneath her. She was head and shoulders above those other girls in artistry, talent and legacy. She'd been recording for 20+ years at that time and the others treated her with utter disrespect. It underscored the great tragedy of her career -- she needed the money. Not because he spent herself into bankruptcy like Toni Braxton but because there simply was no financial reward in traditional soul music during her hit-making years and Black artists did not have any opportunity to do commercial endorsements -- no designer jeans to brand, no make-up, no Capital One commercials, no Allstate insurance voiceovers, etc.
I had to go back and look at the cast on R&B Diva and there were several ladies that keep up a lot of mess. I still say that Chante was the best singer on that show, followed by Dawn Robinson of En Vogue. But it was Dawn, Lil Mo and Kelly Price who kept stirring the pot, but I guess that's what reality tv is all about, capturing drama for tv. I'm not a big social media person, but I do follow Chante on IG and her fan page.
