You took that as meaning "What a question to ask her, when she's actually celebrating her 100th birthday", and which you also assumed was yesterday/today.

The intended meaning is...... that is a question to ask her [[in the future) WHEN she is actually celebrating her 100th birthday, if and when it comes around. Saying to Moe on that occasion "Moe, you're ninety?" would be a compliment. [[she might, of course, instantly drop to the floor, from the shock and surprise at receiving a compliment from you
