I was thinking recently about the Motown EPs that were released in the 1960's. So I did a little research in HEAT WAVE by David Bianco to see how extensive the production was for these records. I was surprised to learn that there were 39 issued during the 1960's and only straggler in 1976.
Here is what I uncovered.
Chisa Records - 2 releases
Gordy label - 6 releases
Motown label - 20 releases
Soul label - 4 releases
Tamla label - 7 releases
I find the entire production that was released as EPs intriguing. I have always been under the impression that EPs were issued in a cover format with pictures of the group in packaging similar to albums. I remember from when I worked in a record store in the 1960's that I never ever have seen any of these Motown produced EPs while the singles were a extremely mass produced and bought by the public. I can't say that I have ever seen any of these 39 issues.
Was there something special or were these used for other than commercial sales items? Furthermore I have never seen any pictures of any of these EPs.
Do any forum members have a representative collection of these in their library and could put a picture of one or two on for me to see. Would like to see one or two Supremes. I have never seen any for sale on eBay either.
Let's have a discussion about these. We all might learn something.
Thanks.
