Excellent documentary. I didn't know that Bob Dylan and Mavis Staples dated and he wanted to marry her.
I just learned that recently myself Marv. Who's showing this in the states?
In America, it aired last year on HBO. They have kept it on demand as well.
I guess it will eventually show up on Netflix. Can't wait. I remember seeing her father at a soul food restaurant on the West Side of Chicago toward the end of the 1990's.
Marv - some of this is in Greg Kot's superb biog of the Staples. Dylan told Pops he wanted to marry her. Pops said 'don't tell me - tell Mavis!'
At the time she thought she just couldn't marry a white guy. Pops said she should be listening to more what Dylan was saying and look at the white folks fighting for civil rights in Alabama and Mississippi.
When interviewed for Kot's book, it crystal clear that the regrets her decision to this day
I couldn't see it from the link but found this online
Thanks Glen. Here's some trivia for you. The guy singing with glasses, blue shirt and gold tie at just 00.15 seconds in the video is none other than singer Donny Gerrad former lead singer of 70s group, "Skylark" he has been singing back up for Mavis for years now:
Glen, I can tell right away from the CBC logo in the lower right corner of your video that this is the documentary I originally posted about. Thanks.
