The Originals - Portrait Of The Originals - CD Release

I just discovered that this received a CD reissue in 1990. Does anyone have this? How is the sound quality?

I'm interested solely for "You Want Hearts & Flowers" - IMO, the best track on the album.

That is the best song on there. Only have the album. Whatever price you paid for the cd version I'd say was worth the price alone.

Forget the 1990 edition. The sound quality [[and the packaging) of the Japanese 2014 edition is better. And it's available at a bargain price

There have been 3 CD issues of this album.

Motown ‎– 37463-5461-2 is from 1990. The sound quality is fine. Typical of the time which was quite early on in CD evolution. I posted a track on YouTube from this album - "Just Another Morning" which should give you an idea of sound quality. Please see below.

As used to happen, there was also an identical CD issued as number MOTD5461 in 1992. The difference was around who was issuing Motown CDs at those times - Motown or MCA.
Both these CD releases were AAD [[so no re-mastering). Both are rare and expensive to buy.

On 22nd October 2014, Motown / Universal in Japan issued the album as UICY76688. Although one of a limited release, this is still readily available on line [[e.g. Ebay ) and at around the $10 mark [[plus additional postage). Don't pay very much more than this. I'm not aware that this has been re-mastered and, although I do have it, I haven't so far played it so someone else will need to comment on the sound quality.

Incidentally, the story is very much the same for their "Baby I'm For Real [[Green Grow The Lilacs)" album on CD.

Hope that helps. Here's "Just Another Morning".

I am familiar with the tunes "The Bells", "I Like Your Style" and "Don't Stop Now" [[all brilliant of course) on this LP but thats it! I shall now be investigating this album further

Yes you did - I didn't see it before finishing my post which was sandwiched around having my tea [[odd but true) lol. The moussaka was lovely. So I must have begun my own post before you stepped in and it never appeared on my screen.

I do have a liking for these bargain Japanese issues and I'm glad that you like the sound quality and packaging. I've bought several of them too, but I was a little disappointed with the Diana Ross "Diana" sound track which sounded a bit like it was lifted from the LP. I especially love the mini-LPs - though more expensive.

Yes, you have to watch with some of those Japanese Universal midline CD reissues [[including a few Motown ones) as they are ripped from the original vinyl and not very good vinyl at that and/or the equipment used is not very good.

Some of the folks here have sharper ears than mine, but I do think the sound quality of the Japanese CD is quite good. Tangentially -- IMO "Just Another Morning" is one of the great undiscovered Motown treasures, an absolutely fantastic song. Can anyone confirm if it's C.P. Spencer singing lead on that track? I've never been quite sure.

Ahem... I believe it is my time to shine... Lol

I do believe it is C.P. Spencer singing lead on "Just Another Morning"... he also sings "Suspicion" and both songs have the same lead. I guess you could define Freddie Gorman as the "smooth" singer, Hank Dixon as the "powerhouse" vocalist and Walter Gaines as the "soft" singer. In other words, listen to the first two minutes of "Baby, I'm For Real" and it goes Freddie then Hank then Walter then CP!

Thanks for this - this release must have slipped by me, I was completely unaware of it. Is there a list available of all of the Japanese Universal releases? I'm wondering if there are more that I missed.

    motown 01,

There's been loads of these Japanese Motown midline CD reissues over the last few years and most of them sound pretty good [[Scherrie & Susaye's "Partners" album being exceptional, in my opinion) but the odd ones ike G.C. Cameron's self titled Motown album from 1976 and Switch's debut album were definitely ripped from vinyl ad son't sound that great. Compare the Switch CD with the UK CD release from Big Break Records and you will see what I mean.

How did I miss this video in HQ? The best known song from the Portrait album, in very good resolution.... Tom, you can put vocals to faces...

Ah, such a brilliant video! And a brilliant song!!! Thanks Mike. I think I had originally worked out who-is-who from the video footage for "Baby, I'm For Real", which I will find and post right now...
