The death of Eugene Cernan in Houston on Monday diminishes us all. For while the space programme was hugely controversial in black America [[think Marvin Gaye's Inner City Blues and Gil Scott-Heron's Whitey on the Moon), it was still a time when great things were possible, when we dared to dream and to achieve things and the best and brightest and most ambitious of us studied engineering, not hustled to get on reality TV,
Apollo proved that if we choose to dedicate time and money and resources, we can do so much.. Think we can't fix poverty or climate change - dream on, we can if we really want to - the US put Cernan and 11 others on the surface of the Moon, brought them back safely, and did it with less computing power than exist in my smartphone.
So yeah, when you get home, look up at the Moon tonight, and raise a glass to Eugene Cernan - spaceman
