The leader, Hamilton Bohannon and his band use to work for Motown back up Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, the Supremes and The Four Tops on stage . Dennis Coffey played with his band at one time.

I have read that Bohannon recorded some stuff at Motown as a proper "recording artist". I think Smokey Robinson was involved. Of course when Motown relocated to Los Angeles he stayed in Detroit and recorded for other labels.

Bohannon toured behind some of the most renowned artists for the most storied record label in the history of R&B and, with the help of Smokey Robinson, also signed a short-term artist contract. A few tracks were written and produced by Terry Johnson of the Flamingos, but the project was shelved.

“After I got into it, I didn’t really want to be a recording artist,” Bohannon recalls. “I asked for my contract, and they gave it back to me. I couldn’t see it going anywhere as a recording artist, as they had all the heavyweights there.”

A poster for a Motortown Review on which he led the band ...
He was with Motown [[or their artists) from 64 to 72 after starting out working with Stevie Wonder. When he led the Motown Sound band it's members included Ray Parker, Melvin Ragin, Dennis Coffey. Michael Henderson, Rod Lumpkin, Lorenzo Brown, Fernando Saunders, Eddie Watkins & more.

Here's an album I have on The Originals which has Hamilton Bohannon producing the entire album. It is on Phase II Records and is entitled "Yesterday and Today", issued in 1981.

Amazingly it found itself licensed by Polydor and issued in France on the Jonathan record label...wonder if it sold any at all in France? All the credits are here....

Another guitarist who played on a lot of the real funky tracks is Leroy Emanuelle, of the Counts fame. He was also the 16 year old guitarist who played on Betty LaVett's My Man.

Bohannon now lives in Atlanta. He called me a few years ago to be in his digital book. That is the last time I spoke with him. Great Drummer and nice guy. I went to Stevie's wedding and sat with Jamerson.
