at my weekend dj gigs in Auckland New Zealand the crowd is mostly 18 - to 25 yr olds im forever trying to take them away from their Ipod playlists and include in my sets as much of the rich musical heritage i know..i find it very interesting what they react to..heres my list of what has thru whatever means of technology or culture been passed onto the next generation in the pacific region....

    Aha - Take On me
Jean paul young - Love Is In the Air

Statler Brothers Flowers On The Wall - i was taking chances last nite and nobody left the dancefloor
Michael Jackson - Dont Stop Til You get or The Way You make me feel
Madonna - Vogue or Like A prayer
Prince - Kiss or when doves cry -anything else they dont seem to know !
David Bowie - Lets Dance [[just men seem to hit the dancefloor for this)

Were you playing these artists at a Dance event?

"..and now heres some artists my patrons just DONT get at all -
    Grace Jones
    Janet Jackson
    Luther Vandross
Run DMC [[Walk this Way nearly cleared the dancefloor !)
    Marvin Gaye
    Doobie Brothers
    Donna Summer
    Bill Withers
    Curtis Mayfield
    Bobby Darin
    Randy Crawford
    The Drifters"

At least half of them would have made me leave the floor too.

For the most part I've forced kids/teens to listen to my tapes/usb music in my transpo and ask them to comment. If you don't mind I can share some of those experiences in your thread [[don't want to contaminate)

A big part of that was the 4 years I transported kids from the Baltimore School for The Arts, to and from school and subjected them to my choons [[for you Mel).

I asked an 18 year old young lady about music today. She had never heard of Marvin Gaye, the Supremes, the Temptations or Diana Ross. She could identify Baby Love, Stop in name of Love and My Girl. I asked her to talk to her parents about the singers

Nomis, your patrons seem to know a lot more than the average twentysomething knows up here. Up here, it seems most just know a few Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Marvin Gaye, or Doors songs. They might know some early rap. But, overall, their knowledge of old-guy music is limited.
