I thought the story was she actually signed with MCA first since she loved how they were handling Patti, Stephanie, and Gladys then was placed back on the Motown roster with some form of compensation in stock to maintain Gordy's stipluation about the company maintaining a certain percentage of minority ownership? There were several articles in the trades noting her reassignment when Berry sold. Unless this phone call took place in 1988 before the sale and her signing with MCA...
