The Supremes harmonies were some of the best ever. Supremes as in "not Andantes" or others.
It means they worked fast and cheap. And some producers like that bland homogonized background sound, others, like me... prefer background vocals with some spice. Nobody else in the industry liked the Andantes sound, because after 1972, they were out of work, while people like Merry Clayton, Darlene Love, Cissy Houston, Madeline Bell, Sunny and Sue, etc. worked CONSTANTLY and were in high demand.
