Good episode. Thanks Glen. I wondered what happened to them and am not surprised that things ended up for them the same way it has for countless other groups. Sister Sledge meet Lakeside! LOL!

Man, Lakeside was one of my favorite bands. I have all of the original SOLAR albums and could pull them out today and listen to them back to back. Their setup [[four singers, five band members) was unique and their sound was fresh. Between Mark Wood and Otis Stokes, they had two voices that were capable of playing off the baritone/tenor dynamic that David Ruffin and Eddie Kendricks perfected two decades before. Those brothers were tight. Heatwave also played off of this with the two Wilder brothers.

And in my opinion, Stephen Shockley was one of the best guitarists in soul/R&B/funk. It's too bad they fell victim to envy and greed like so many other bands did. I found out that they performed at a local casino about a year ago and was unhappy to have missed them. Had I shown up and it was just Mark Wood and eight unknown musicians, I would have been more upset. For now, I'm glad to have my memories intact of a fantastic ensemble.

You know I never really took that much notice of Lakeside at the time. Reading the above comments has made me want to go back and listen to their stuff. I will watch this episode and take it from there. Thanks for the reminder glencro.

I saw them on the 'Budweiser Super Fest' show at Madison Square Garden, they were really good. The whole show was killer, especially The O'Jays!!

Sister you are so right on! I saw them at the Budweiser Superfest in Chicago years ago and they tore it up. I saw the O'Jays in September and they have not lost anything. Age is not a factor when you're good..............you're just good!

What happened to bands? Outside of country and rock, there are very few to be found. Technology allows one guy to do almost all of the production without having to deal with the headaches associated with egos and personality conflicts. We started on this road when we morphed from huge ensembles to duos back in the '80's. Remember Cameo, EW&F, Parliament, Con Funk Shun, Lakeside, the Bar-Kays, Maze, and others with seven to 13 artists? Look at the urban/hip hop charts and you won't find a single band in the top 25.

What happened to bands? I'll tell you. This current generation of 20, 30 somethings grew up without music education in public schools mainly because of budget cuts. They do not know how to play instruments. Now it's gotten so bad that they view playing instruments as old fashioned and a waste of time. Their "music" is digitized, computerized , etc.

I'd suggest they lack the socialization required to perform as equals, as well. Every great band had members with egos that either chafed at dealing with their mates' input and the attention that they got from fans. Now? Like you said, they can sit alone and program a computer to play the music without having to bite their tongues. Even best friends grow to hate each other after spending so much time together. So forget bringing nine cats together to make something better than they think they can do alone.

It's just a sad state of affairs Sister. First we're loosing all of our great, great singers and today you don't have as many REAL musicians!
