I have long been a big fan of Shirley's music. I dig a lot of female jazz singer/pianists but
Shirley always held a special place for me because of the sheer intimacy of her technique
and delivery. They say never say never but I seriously doubt another woman like her will
ever occur in American, hell, world jazz music. The sensibilities that created her are gone
for the most part. I know Miles Davis absolutely adored her and I can understand why. She
gave her all to the end....

I believe Ms. Horn was a stand-alone as well; the hushed vocals and languid timing were all her own.

I agree, Ms. Roberta! All others, even Barbra Streisand who I love, merely sing an impersonation of Ms. Shirley Horn's version!

Roberta75, you are so right! No one can hold a candle to the great Shirley Horn version of Here's to Life! I remember when 60 minutes did a story on her and they show her in the studio recording that song with orchestra, and her reading of that song just brought me to tears. I am so glad I got the opportunity to see her perform live in NYC. What a treasure this lady was!
