The unarmed homeless man fatally shot by police Tuesday near the Venice boardwalk in Los Angeles grew up in Troy.

Rensselaer County court officers and attorneys with the Public Defenders Office immediately recognized Brendon Glenn, 34, when his picture hit online media sites Thursday. Up to just over a year ago, he had lived at 2768 Sixth Ave., according to court records.

Glenn moved to New York City in the past year and then went to Los Angeles. The shooting, which has prompted marches and rallies critical of the police, is under investigation by the department.

"It's sad," Rensselaer County Public Defender John Turi said.
Glenn had minor scrapes with the law in Rensselaer County.

Glenn's last case locally was a charge of criminal contempt lodged against him in Brunswick Town Court in 2013, according to court records. Glenn pleaded guilty in August 2013 to second-degree criminal contempt, a misdemeanor, and served four months in the Rensselaer County Jail.

An order of protection was signed in the case telling him he needed to keep away from the victim for five years.

Los Angeles Police Department officials told the Los Angeles Times that two officers went to Windward Avenue about 11:20 p.m. Tuesday because someone reported a homeless man with a dog "harassing customers" outside a building. The officers talked to the man briefly, the LAPD said. When he walked toward the Venice boardwalk, the officers returned to their patrol car.

Soon after, police said, the officers saw Glenn "physically struggling" with a bouncer outside a bar.

The officers approached the man and tried to detain him, police said, leading to a "physical altercation." During that confrontation, one of the officers opened fire.

The man, who acquaintances said went by the nickname name "Dizzle," was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Acquaintances told the newspaper that Glenn went everywhere with his Lab mix, Dozer.

Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck told reporters Thursday that he was "very concerned" about the shooting, which was recorded by a security camera, according to the LA Times.

"Any time an unarmed person is shot by a Los Angeles police officer, it takes extraordinary circumstances to justify that," Beck told the paper.

A security camera on a building captured the incident, the paper reported Friday, but police declined to elaborate about what was on the recording.

According to the Times, those who knew Glenn described him as a kind man who constantly told people he loved them. He was known for his "hand hugs" — grabbing hold of someone's hand before saying goodbye. Glenn treated his dog like "his baby," one man said.

But they acknowledged he also had his struggles.

"He was a drinker. He has a drinking problem," said Allison Holden, 23, who is also homeless. "But we all have problems."

Glenn's friends acknowledged he would sometimes be vocal when he drank — one mentioned "a little mean streak" — but said they had never seen him be aggressive.

Tim Pardue, who manages a homeless center on Windward Avenue, said Glenn stopped by the center Tuesday evening and admitted he had been drinking since 11 a.m.

He left about 8 p.m., thanking Pardue for the noodles and crackers he had given him, according to the Times.

Bill Hinson, 37, said his friend told him he wanted to find some money to buy a beer, and took off for the boardwalk.

    "It's heartbreaking," he told reporters.

Glenn attended Tamarac High School from 2000-02.

"We are saddened by the news of Mr. Glenn. Our heart goes out to his family and friends during this difficult time," said Brunswick [[Brittonkill) Central School District Superintendent Angelina Maloney.
