Marv,
Was Ollie McLaughlin the producer of that song?
J.j. Could move, very cool indeed from the great year[1966].
I always loved that song. I was just three years old when it came out, but I remember watching that Calla label spin round and round on the big record player.
But, the true mono version of it is kind of rare on CD. The only place I have it is on that Rhino "Beg, Scream & Shout" box.
Producer was Lew Futterman, according to the label on this youtube clip.
I saw JJ live in the UK back end of the 60s in a neighbouring town. 'Modsters' from the area but the town had a sizeable anti-mod crowd, so it was a split audience. I remember poor JJ having to dodge glasses thrown at him from this crowd but carried on regardless. I think we left sharpish soon afterwards.
I think this was recorded in England.
It was. Here's a snippet from Wikipedia ......
The single was recorded in the United Kingdom, featuring some of Britain's top jazzmusicians of the day, including Terry Smith on guitar, Dick Morrissey on tenor sax and John Marshall on drums, and who would later make up his backing band for the following two albums [[one of which was also titled "But It's Alright"). In 1969, Warner Bros. Records re-released "But It's Alright" as a single after he signed with them. The single peaked at No. 45 on Billboard when it re-entered the chart on March 29, 1969.
All I know is that was my JAM back in the day! LOL!
Hey solulster,i bet that you were so cool at three they were calling you[baby soulster].
Marv2,
Sounds good to me, 1966 was an awesome year for soul music. I know R&R [[arr&beee) would be joining that class too.
