The Love We Had Stays On My Mind

For my money The Dells did the definitive version of this song but I was
wondering what other folks make of this Fred Wesley take featuring
    Carmen Lundy. Like or loathe?...

I never heard this version before either. I also liked Jerry Butler and Brenda Lee Eager's version [[linked below) of this song.

I have been waiting for The Dells album that features that song to be released on CD. It is probably my best known Dells album, scratch that it is the only Dells album I owned besides compilations.

I think Freds version is a nice JAZZ arrangement of TLWHSOMM.
    But The Dells version

I was 10 or 11 when the Dells came out with TLWHSOMM. The track was so deep , I felt the hurt then , before I had a woman or a situation to apply the feeling to. Years later I understood what was going on , but at 11 yrs old ...........[[ shi... )...... Marvin J let me know that [["You can't imagine.......NOBODY KNOWS.......) The emotion of the Dells version sets it apart from anything. Nothing beats Marvin Junior ,ripping your heart out.

I agree with you, daddyacey. The Dells TLWHSOMM is one of my favorite songs EVER. Marvin and Johnny were a one-two punch that could not be beat. I never get tired of the song. Marvin exclaming and Johnny with the high pitched "wooooooo"; I don't think there are any comparisons. And then adding Chuck, Vern and Mickey in the middle as the balance...it does not get any better than this!

The track is classic. Classic has no fear of age or time.

It's perhaps my favorite '45 of all time, and I LOVED Ellis Hazlip's "SOUL" on PBS. Thanks so much for posting this. I got to see the Mighty, Mighty Dells once in the mid-late 80's in NYC - they were indeed MIGHTY!

As I said at the beginning I thought and still think The Dells version is the
definitive one for me too but I always remain open to other intepretations
of classic soul songs. Especially from singers more or less outside of the routine genre. Nobody to me sang Just My Imagination like the Tempations
but I have and enjoy versions by jazz singers Rene Marie and Dianne Reeves....Nice to hear from you anyway...
