"Nightflight" Tue Oct 28, 9P-12M ET: My Birthday Show/Ashford & Simpson!

Hello there, Folks! Tonight, on "Nightflight", I am bringing my "Singer/Songwriter" series to an apt finale with a tribute to Valerie Simpson and the late Nick Ashford! Of course, you all know their many magnificent Motown contributions! Well...tonight, I'll bring to you not only those Motown gems and their Warner and Capitol releases, but material they composed and released prior to and apart from their Motown years. I also have for you rare tracks and some very significant interviews with Nick and Val. In doing research for this show, I found, just yesterday, as a matter of fact, a recent and most amazing interview with Valerie that will knock your socks off...it made me cry! So, do join me tonight, for this tribute to 2 of my favorite composer/singers...Val and Nick! And being able to air this tribute on my birthday...the BIG one...is not only a wonderful coincidence, it's a very special gift [[that I may be stretching out for 2 shows). All this and more...tonight...on "Nightflight" on WOMR 92.1 FM Provincetown and streaming live worldwide in digital stereo at www.womr.org Thanks so much! See you on the radio! John

We were born the same year...I'll also be 80 in a couple of weeks!!!! Well, sometimes it feels like 80.

Well, Valerie's album from last year is titled Dinosaurs Are Coming Back Again.

Any chance we may hear "I Am Your Man" by either the 4 Tops or Bobby Taylor? Or "I'm Glad About It" by the Supremes and 4 Tops.

Frist off John the image is from a huge wall at Junior's Barber Shop, here in Vancouver, which I shot this detail of, this very afternoon, with you in mind. I am enjoying the interview with Valerie Simpson, and totally agree with her that it is SO important that credit goes out to musicians, and it is difficult to understand why people who take music from online don't seem to want to know who was behind the ear candy they so readily goggle up. Great show as always!

I don't know why I never noticed this before... but listening to Nick & Val's production of "Ain't Nothing like The Real Thing'' tonight and their use of reeds, I was reminded of a similar use of reeds in the non-A & S vault track [[Al Hamilton-Norma Jean Toney-composers; Al Kent-producer) "It's Gonna Be Always".
What is also interesting to me is that that song is so different from their compositions recorded for 'Right On' by Jean Terrell as well as "You've Got To Pay the Price".
But then again, as they say, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
