Question About Complete Motown Singles Volume 6

I just noticed that my copy of the Complete Motown Singles Volume 6 does not have the extra sheet rubber cemented onto the back. All of the other sets in the series that I have in my collection have this extra sheet on the back. My copy of Volume 6 was purchased new about 2009 or so, but it was one of those that miraculously showed up after the set had been unavailable for a while.

Did the earlier copies of Complete Motown Singles Volume 6 have the extra sheet stuck to the back? I checked with my daughter, who also has a copy of Volume 6, and hers does not have the extra sheet either. However, her copy was purchased about the same time as mine and from the same source, the Tower Records website.

My copy doesn't have an attached sheet. I bought it from Motown Select when it was first released.

NothingButSoul, you're in luck -- there's nothing missing from your copy of The Complete Motown Singles [[Vol. 6). The semi-loose sheet on the back of The Complete Motown Singles boxed-set CD series didn't start until Vol. 7. [[I have the entire series and I double-checked to verify.) The only problem that you might encounter with Vol. 6 is that, for the cross-referencing pages in the back which designate Artist Name, Song Title, and Record Label/Record # and the corresponding CD Disc/Track # that they can be found on, some of the cross-references are wrong. I checked each and every cross-reference for Disc/Track # individually, and I had to cross out the errors and hand-write them in. There was a cross-referencing error on a couple of other volumes as well which needed to be manually corrected.

I was always afraid that the lightly-rubber-glued sheet on the back of Vols. 7-12B might come loose or get ripped. To compensate for this, I carefully took the page completely off. Then, using two-sided Scotch Tape, I taped the loose page inside the back cover which keeps it protected and which looks great!

I hope this helps. - Gary

That is exactly what I did as well Gary, though I've used Blu-Tack instead ..

I bought all of the TCMS sets as soon as they became available and my TCMS6 doesn't have one of those sheets either. The fact that they started turning up with TCMS6 when some copies "mysteriously" became available after the set was supposedly "sold-out" suggests to me that Universal re-pressed a number of them rather than stumbled across a batch that had been mislaid. Hmmmm ....

I also removed the sheets and placed them inside back cover and they stuck without tape or glue. I also have Vol. 5 [[1965) with the rubber sheet but not Vol. 6 so they started with Vol. 5

Hey Roger, like they say, great minds run in the same channel! HeHe! That is odd that an additional batch turned up suddenly. I hadn't heard about that.

Yeah, Noel181, that loosely-hanging back page looks cool inside the back cover. But my back page was stuck on the back with one little piece of rubber glue which left most of the page loose and vulnerable to rips and tears. The two-sided tape fastened it securely. Aren't you afraid that yours will rip if you accidently catch it on something?

I just double-checked my TCMS 5 and my copy does NOT have the back glued page. Either I got a bum copy or you got a special bonus copy.

I was always afraid my loosely hanging back pages would tear as well. Maybe I should do the fix!

I knew the reason at the time, but memory is now dim[[mer) ... was Volume 7 the first volume to become available in the shops? [[I know the earlier ones went to retail subsequently.) Did the sheet contain info necessary for retail, eg a barcode or something? It was something like that. Maybe the ones shipped direct by Hip-O didn't have the sheets as they weren't necessary.

Yes Keith, the sheets have a barcode. They also list some of the artists/songs that appear on that volume, which would otherwise not be apparent to a customer in a store who can't open the set. Your explanation makes sense.

Yes, Keith, and they also contain photos of the Motown artists contained within. The pages are super-attractive, and, when taped in securely, they really add a special touch to the boxed sets. - Gary

I didn't actually start buying them until 6 sold out, i.e. after they went to retail, and all my sets from 1 through 12B [[except 6) have the sheet. So they must have started retrospectively printing them up for the earlier volumes?

I've got a complete set of sheets, except for volume 6, which I bought on eBay for stupid money before they started mysteriously turning up new again. Is there a volume 6 sheet out there?

I've got all the volumes and they all came with that sheet.
I THREW VOL 2's AWAY! AAARGH!!! It was the first one I got in 2006 and either treated it like a bit of wrapping to go with the plastic film or it just ended up with all the Christmas paper/boxes, I dont know really.
I have all the others though.I got mine'except the last 3 or 4, between end of 2006 to 2009/10.... I think.

Edit...I just remembered I had to exchange my first Vol 2 because the back cover was detatching itself from the book. I got another copy and maybe I didnt get that sheet with the 2nd copy.I did throw away the sheet from the 1st one though!

Here you go Oddly, the sheets for volumes 1-5 are made of heavier card stock than volumes 7-12B.

I don't have one for 6, that was really my question - it's the only one I "missed", so thanks for confirming it exists!

I got vol 2 as a 2006 Christmas present,it came from a record shop in York. Thay had all the volumes that had been released up to that point. So I'm not sure where they got them from if they weren't supposed to be selling them in shops 'till 2007.

They were nearly double the Amazon price, thats where I went for the rest

I remember seeing some of the early volumes on sale at Soul Brother Records in Putney [[south-west London) around that time at similar prices. I assumed that they had bought them as "ordinary customers" from one of the E-tialers and had marked them up accordingly. I don't know if many people bought them at those prices but it certainly made the shop look good as a specialist Soul/Jazz retailer.

I got the first few volumes direct from Hip-O and then, when Hip-O stopped shipping to the U.K., through Soulmusic.com. The most recent [[long delayed) volumes I've purchased through Amazon.

What got me was online Woolworths and WH Smiths were selling at around £100 each volume.

They had the shop overheads included in the price when its online. Then you had to pick it up from shop. I emailed the respective websites and told them they were on the road to ruin selling for double the Amazon price, they were both in trouble at the time. Their answer was basically..... Tough! Woolies continued for just a couple of years and went bust.I didn't shed a tear, their own fault. I bought all mine except vol 2 from Amazon for an average price just under £50. No car parking/petrol to pay for and half price,no wonder the internet is destroying shops.

    Amazon £24-£50 ish.

I haven't got my copy of TCMS vol 6 to hand, but I'm pretty sure it came with the one of those sheets [[loose) pictured in radionixon's post above.

My copy was purchased from Amazon UK well before those copies suddenly appeared later on.

    Cheers

Well, now I feel cheated! After putting out over $1,000 for all these sets, I've discovered that the only copies I have of these sheets are from Volumes 7 through 12B. I ordered every one of these from Hip-O Select as soon as they were released.

I removed those sheets from the back of the sets and stored them inside the back cover. I also keep the CDs stored in slimline CD cases to prevent damage to the boxes and books.

Yeah, me, too! I pre-ordered all of them through Hip-oSelect. I even paid extra to get them here in my grubby little hands ASAP. Now I find out that I got screwed out of the back sheets for Vols. 1-6. What gives? I could understand them running out of back pages for orders which were placed later in time, but the Pre-orders should certainly have contained everything as originally intended. I suppose it's not the end of the world, but, damn!

I cant imagine why you didn't get the sheets, mine are the "original" issues [[to UK). I tried to order from Hipo but was told they didn't ship to UK.

I've scanned Vol 6 for whoever wants one. If you want the rest except vols 2 & 9.Which I'll hopefully have this week. I can scan them tomoz.

I also only have the extra sheet for Volumes 7 through 12B.

I purchased directly from Hip-O as soon as each set was released, especially for the volumes through 1969. When the collections started appearing at retail outlets close to the Hip-O availability date I started to buy them through retail to avoid Hip-O's high shipping charges. It appears keith_hughes' explanation may be the correct one.

Through the years I've found out as a collector that you never know if being the first to get something is good or if you wait it might be better. Think of all the covers that were changed in some way - some better, some worse. At least I have all the sets, I can live without the marketing extras. I don't think there are pics on those sheets that aren't in the booklets.

This is interesting. I finally got around to checking my sets today and discovered that I actually got the extra backing sheet for each one of them from the very beginning starting with volume one. Yes, it's true that the "weight" of the paper changed with number seven going forward. I ordered all of mine directly from HipO Motown Select when each was first released.

How odd that different folks got varying versions of these releases insofar as the backing sheet goes!!!!!!

I am new to this forum and have just found this info about the sheets which were stuck onto the back of the Motown Singles Collections. Checking my copies I am missing a few. Would it be possible to send me scans of the following?
    Vol 2, 4, 5 & 6. Why I never got these when I purchased the Hip-O-Select sets beats me??
