Cool Motown's previously-unreleased tracks from the vaults

There’s no doubt about it! The number of previously-unreleased tracks from the Motown vaults over the years has been phenomenal, and a great many of these have been dynamite productions! It makes us wonder how these gems ever got turned down and relegated to the vaults in the first place. If you had to choose 10 of your very favorites, what would they be? Here are just a few of mine:

Martha Reeves & The Vandellas - It’s So Easy To Fall In Love [[With A Guy Like You)
Martha Reeves & The Vandellas - A Little Bit Of Heaven [[On A Little Patch Of Earth)
Diana Ross & The Supremes - If You Should Walk Away
The [[70's) Supremes - The Day Will Come Between Sunday And Monday
Chris Clark - I Just Wanna Be Lovin’ You
The Marvelettes - Love Is Good
The Velvelettes - Love Is Good [[same backing track as The Marvelettes' version, both featuring The Andantes)
The Temptations - I’m Doing It All
Brenda Holloway - All Your Love
Smokey Robinson & The Miracles - I Heard It Through The Grapevine [[Alternate Version)

I have more than just this one, but I am surprised no one cited the "single-that-shoulda-been" by Martha Reeves and The Vandellas: "I've Got To See You"! What a catchy song! Definitely danceable! The strings are pretty delicious, too! I would love to hear a stereo mix of the track someday! "Hello, Johnny? Listen, Johnny..." Love it!

The Underdogs' version of "Just Walk In My Shoes" was surprisingly not bad. But I was very disappointed. I'd expected a great garage band style guitar break in the middle. Instead, they used strings and continued singing. This is yet another proof that Motown had genius only for their patented own style of music. They didn't have that special talent to make super Blues. Gospel. MOR, C&W, Jazz or Garage music.

danman869, I love that track, too. In fact, nearly all of the tracks on Martha's "Spellbound: Lost & Found" were strong, powerful tracks. If I didn't mention it in my list of favorite previously-unreleased tracks, it's only because it didn't occur to me.

mysterysinger, I really like this Underdog's track a lot. I thought the lead singer's voice fit the Motown production [[horns & strings) beautifully. If Motown had dubbed in The Andantes' back-up vocals, I would really love it! I wonder where whomever found this track to upload on YouTube? It's gotta exist on CD somewhere. I know I don't have it in my Motown collection [[darn it)!

Robb, I not only agree with you, I will go further and say [[a) I don't think it's the Underdogs and [[b) I don't think it's Motown - at least, not 60s Motown. There's no trace of such a recording in the Vaults in the paperwork I've seen - which is not everything, of course, though I have dug pretty deep in my research for Ace and "Don't Forget The Motor City". Hmm.

Yes it's the Magnificent Men on Capitol - not Motown. Well done each. Mystery solved! But still a good track.

They sure fooled me. Those horns and strings sounded like Motown to a tee, especially since the song itself is Motown. Who would have ever guessed Capitol Records!!!

The link Carole posted shows the LP producers to have been Sonny Sanders [[Satintones and then various Ric-Tic sides) and Horace Ott, who was involved with a number of Gladys Knight's pre-Motown sides ... These guys did a fine job behind the glass, and would probably be flattered to think their production has been, uh, "mistaken" for the real thing.

That's for sure, Keith. Very few people could successfully duplicate "The Motown Sound", but these guys did. Motown should have signed/re-signed them!
